Default Tranny Problem

My truck shifts smooth but it doesnt want to come out of third.I either have t let off the throttle a bunch or punch till it hits 2500 rpm and then it goes to fourth and od really soon after that.

the tranny is only a 3 speed with od, what you think is 4th is really lock up, it feels like another gear but its not. your tps may be going out, i would start there, lock up and od are both controlled by the computer, 1-3 are mechanical shifts that work off line pressure and whatnot

With the TPS you could pull it out and get some electrical parts spray cleaner and clean it up it will probably feel crunchy when you pull it out if its dirty. cleaning it can let you know if its bad or not most times and possibly get you a little bit more life out of it. They tend to act up mine does from time to time causing it to randomly lock and unlock while going down the highway and sometimes make it act funny while locking up. So as others said I would try checking that 1st.

i put the switches for od and lock up on my truck cause it would shift right and i put around 4 trannys in it (each only lasting 1500miles) before the shop figured out i had an electrical problem, to do the switches you just need to find out which two wires control lock-up and od and do some custom wireing, i know you have to ground the lock-up switch but not sure about od, the wire colors vary year to year

ok so on the front driver side of the motor on the side of the injection pump is a black square looking thing with 2 screws that hold it on and an electrical plug on it. undo the 2 screws and the plug pull it off. once you have it off if you look on the back side of it which would be towards the motor you will see where there is a circular area with what looks like 2 small triangles in it. That is the part that rotates back and forth to send the signal of your throttle positioning.

I usually use a set of needle nose pliers to rotate it around some while doing that use some electrical parts/conector cleanner and spray down into it until it moves freely. after that reinstall and it should work great.

here are some pictures of what it is circled in red

glad to know I could help you out I have had to do that same thing a few times you get pretty good at it . had to do it a few times at gas stations and what not . Oh and if you ever end up in that situation wd40 works in a pinch to clean it but the electronics cleaner is the best for it.
