lets settle this... hx40
im sure everybody knows about the $300 hx40's on ebay. and that they are chinese garbage or whatever. but then i see people saying to pin the compressor housing or whatever. so if i were to get one of those and get it pinned would it be a fairly solid turbo or is there other problems with it? cus im on a budget and cant bring myself to spending super money on a turbo wheather its the bees knees or not. im sure you guys can set me straight here.

China can stick it where the sun don't shine. I buy as little from those little sh*ts as possible. And would never think of putting a chinese product on my pickup.
As far as a true holset hx 40 the are a good charger in my opinion if they are pinned. Lots of trucks used to run them a few years ago when that was abut all that was around for these trucks. Yes they are weak and yes there arer better choices but it'll still put a smile on your face.

this is the worst subject to start a thread about. people have different intrests, luck with things, and opinions. people can argue all day over this kind of stuff. in the end the person is just going to do what they want anyways. reguardless of opinions. its your truck, do what YOU want.i know of two people in my area that gernaded genuine holset turbos, and bought the cheap knock off hx40s for 300, and they have been running them for over a year now with absolutely no problems, spools good, sounds good, cooled egts. if you pinn the comp housing and dont block off the wastegate right away, and accually use the wastegate and dont beat the **** out of and overspool the turbo. im sure they will last. its how you treat equipment. but like i said. in the end youll do what you want. everyone has different opinions. its your truck, do what you think is best for it.

If it comes from China, then quality control is the issue. Cummins has OEM parts made in China, but keeps a close watch on the materials and manufacturing. That's OK, but not great.
Those $300 turbos, don't have much in the way of quality control. If you get a good one, you're probably OK. A lot of them will work fine for a long time. If you get a bad one though, well.....
With low quality parts spinning 100,000 rpm in a low quality housing that won't hold them if they do fail, and that may take out your engine if they fail, I wouldn't chance it.

Search other cummins forums. LOTS of guys bought those 300$ ebay hx40's, have put 80k miles on their trucks pulling an towing an racing, and they still have no shaft play in them. I just bought an ebay hx35 an so-far so-good. It's only boosting 20psi but it does the job. Gonna turn it up to 35psi and be lighting that dually up
