Rebuilding motor with badass parts vs. putting in used motor from junkyard?
Rebuild... You might end up with another "problem" motor outa the deal. Rebuild it so you know what you have and itll be good to go when its all said and done. They had a master rebuild kit on ebay for 550 bucks
You can do that? How much would a shop charge you think?
I have bought a few complete motors. never had problems, but i know the guy that i got them from really well and he will gaurantee them to run and run well. but the engine i rebuilt is a powerhouse and i have no complaints.
call all your local shops and get a price.... they will tell you how much is the estimate.... they wont give you an out the door price before they do the work just incase they run into a problem.
and i wouldnt go with the cheapest shop... i would go with the average one or one with a good rep.
you dont want to have to get the engine rebuild twice..
also ask for the warranty if they have any on it.
(this was a few years ago)
i had a freind they bought a dirt cheap 350. but it was the cheapest place to get an rebuilt engine in north texas (andrews motors). he put the first engine in the truck.. had to take it back out cause it was screwed up. 2nd one did the same thing....3rd one in turned over and ran... but was still acting weird.... 40 miles down the road... the k5 burned to the ground.....
needless to say that engine place has been closed down for a while now. weather the fire was caused buy the engine or something my buddy did when installing it, i don't know, but i do know he has installed atleast 20 others for customers and they never came back with problems.
unfortantly that engine placed closed there doors and shutdown when my friend tried to to have them look at what happen... so he is left out of 900 cash and a burnt down truck...
they choice is yours
! but i know i would spend a little more to get it done right. because i know i cant do it.

well if it were me I would do just run the engine you got into the ground while you save up money to do build a monster engine ha. I would just rebuild it and be done. I would also add a few of the cheap go fast goodies also
You've got to know what you've got before you make a plan!!!
Check your compression before you do anything else! If it's low, you need rings, now check your bearings. If the compression is not low, then don't worry about the blow-by.
Don't put a lot of faith in your local shop's opinion. Mine tried to sell me a new IP, because of a leaky tappet cover gasket.
