Default New to Cummins, former F250 owner.. have questions!!

Well hello guys. Never though I'd be the owner of a cummins, much less a dodge, but I found a good deal and I jumped on it. I regret selling my 7.3 6spd psd, so I went on the hunt for another. I found a deal on a cummins before I found another Ford so here I sit with my new '97 Cummins.

I have a LOT of questions, and will be making lots of posts (yes I always search). There are a lot of differences between the International and Cummins motors, different terms and different strong points and weak points, so I'll do my best to understand your guys lingo.

I've done a lot of researching before buying this truck and though it IS a project, it still runs fairly great and drives well. It's SO much slower than my old PSD though, and my psd only had an exhaust and tymar 6637 (bhaf to you cummins guys) filter.

I look forward to your guys input and help, and hope to contribute back as well!

Matt

Welcome Matt - you will not regret the Cummins - with very little investment you can make 300+hp. And a 97 5 speed is a great platform for starting with.

I will try to dig up some links for you.

Thanks Dr. Evil! I hear that basic intake, exhaust, star wheel, fuel plate will be at or over 300hp? Dont know about torque though.

look into a good clutch also... that way you can add power without breaking stuff. good choice on the cummins

I disagree, on a 12v fuel press is very important. Fuel lubes the plungers and barrels of the ppump and unlike the 24v the 12v have to have fuel press to run.

i'm in Buffalo NY.

So fuel pressure needs to be regulated on the 12v is what you are saying? I know on my powerstroke fp isn't an issue generally
