Default Which turbo for 600hp daily driver

I have a question for those more in the know than I. Right now I have an S300 62/65/14 sitting on the bench. It is rebuilt and has a new turbine wheel....ready to roll. With some reading I have done I think this might be a bit to small for my 600 hp goals. I have the opportunity to sell this 62 to a friend that is looking for about 450-500 and I can buy a 64/71/14 for the same price I am selling the 62 for. Would the 64/71 be better for my 600hp DD goal? According to my calcs I will need 550-600hp to crack the 12 second 1/4 mile barrier. I am going to swap out my 370's for some SDX injectors here down but I need to make a decision on the turbo pretty quick so I don't lose out on the upgrade if the 64 will work better. So should I sell my 62 and buy the 64? Sell the 62 and put the money in the bank and save up for a Source compound kit and use my HX up top? I'd rather stay with the single but compounds are cool too.

64/71/13SS would allow you to attain your goal....

HOWEVER...
To have a daily driver, single charger 600hp 12v it will be a smoky driver as your going to need at least a 5x.018 injector to do it.You "might" make your goal with a 5x.014 IF you have had your pump sent out and prepped on a stand but if you don't,it will be tough.

With a custom built 913,Weston's 5x.014's and a HTT 66/71/13SS I have gone over 550 on fuel with 20 degrees of timing. There are alot of other little things I have done to attain this also,so its not just your average pump/injectors and turbo swap to do it.With my truck after a week of daily driving it the right corner and tailgate will covered in soot even with the small injector.

Compounds will make the 600 alot easier and less smoky for daily driving. If your going to do that though I'd keep the 62/65 for the top charger and not sell it.Hang a S400 down below and you can get the whole setup right from Rip if your not using the stainless steel exhaust housing.Last I knew he did not build a set of twins which utilized the SS exhaust housings.Another option is chat with your local High Tech Turbo dealer as they also have twin kits to fit your charger.

Well 600hp isn't a necessity....I'd like to hit the 12's though. What could I get out of it with a set of 5x14's or 16's with that 64/71 or is it going to still be smokey for the DD. I can't do compounds for a while so I'd need to stick with the single for a while....I have no problem having the pump or another pump set-up.....

How much HP will it take me to get my reg cab 2500 4x4 in the 12's and still DD? I think Compounds are gonna be the best option because of the DD aspect right? I'm going to call my buddy and see what his goals are as that 64/71 might be better for him and it might be best for me to just keep my 62/65 and handg the S400 under it like Andy said...it's nice to have some options. I wonder how close to the 12's i can get with the 62/65 and my 370's or a set of SDX 5x14's?

From what I have read and understand the 64 wheel make more power than a 66 on a 12valve. A 64 wont be hard to light and it will support 550 easily. I am in the exact same boat as you are except I don't really race. I've been throwing the idea of twins around for a long time

I am in the exact same boat as you are except I don't really race. I've been throwing the idea of twins around for a long time, but am still unsure of which direction I will go. As of right now I'm fairly certain I will go with a 64/71-14 because with proper set up I wont have any issues lighting it the 71 turbine will flow enough on the top end and a 14cm housing will keep a happy medium between heat and spool.

A 62 top charger might be a touch on the big side. Do you want crazy top end or the truck to light yesterday?

I am just worried about it being smokey and really laggy driving around everyday. I don't tow a lot...couple times a year I haul my Duster to the drag strip and I haul steers and hogs to market but that's about it. Our trucks are pretty close to the same and I have another head waiting to get o-ringed and studs to go on then the turbo and manifold will get bolted on. I know the 62/65 would be the best for twins but will limit me as a single. The 64/71 will give me the top end bu will it be to laggy and smokey for everyday driving?

It's looking like the HX35/Ht3B might be the best option for me.....how much HP can they support? I assume they will be fine for my little bit of towing and DD duties as well?

Thanks Wyatt....I forgot about that set-up until you mentioned it. PDR and Source have some nice kits and I am sure there are others out there too....$4k for both turbo's, manifold, plumbing and exhaust isn't to bad. Coming up with the 4K it though

That set up will handle 720 HP on a 12V. How do I know that, well, ask Harry at Peak Diesel (you know the guy that used to work for Piers, aka PDR)...

He has his '96 12V turned down to 550 RWHP DD...

The only issue is the heat exchanger but that can be plumbed in elsewhere. I think that's the way I am going to lean. Unless there is a better answer with a single turbo out there.
