i ended up using the 4k springs in mine they dont require the valve springs but you dont want to exceed 3200RPM without them i ran stock springs with my 4k kit for about a year but as soon as i put my exhaust brake on i upgaded to 60lb valve springs

I think 4Ks pull harder that 3Ks but I only ran 3s for about a week in my 97. As for 60lb springs I was back and forth on it I decided that I wanted them in there if I ever had a runaway or if ever tried my luck at a truck pulling I was worried that I might break something and the engine would free rev. The way I figured it was valve springs are cheap engines aren’t.

As for 3Ks in autos I have heard that people say that because a stock autos should shift well before 3K however if you plan to do anything in the 100mph+ range , have a built trans that shifts later to maximize the gear or plan on doing any type of competition then 4ks are a must.

This is now considered to be just a guide. There lots of people grinding their own custom plates and getting them from other sources.

Bumping the timing will give you a very marginal bump in hp - but, more importantly it will make the truck run better. You should be somewhere between 15-17 degrees.

For some extra performance you should look into a 3k or 4k Governor Spring Kit.

Also, have a look at this:

i was wondering how to adjust my timing in my 95 12 valve. you said between 15 17?

Hi Mike - welcome

I am talking about injector pump timing and not engine timing.

You will need some special tools to do the job. Heres the basic procedure:

TSB 18-10-94 Rev. A

That being said, have to repaired your KDP (Killer Dowel Pin)??

If you start a thread under 12V drivetrain - Im sure many people will chime in.
