Default Crank Sensor Function?

Does anyone know what the function of a "working" crank sensor is in a 2003 5.9 liter diesel? Or the function of a non working crank sensor? Thanks in advance!

Default

It lets the ECM know when #1 cylinder is near top dead center (TDC) so it can activate #1 injector, and allow the engine to start.

As far as one that doesn't work, it'll throw certain codes, and possibly a no start or really erratic idle.
