Takes 5 minutes literally, here is a pic of the NR4 line; this happens often enough that they are for sale on E-bay and all over the net.

6spd, Ya know its kind of funny I came across this thread of yours. I had the same problem going on for about 2 weeks. Annoying as hell for sure! I also thought loose valves. Took my truck to local diesel mechanic and he quoted me $300 bucks to adjust valves. Not in my current budget. Using a mechanics stethescope, I was able to narrow it down to the #4 injector line clamp. Sure as $hit it was loose. (Just as StroupDog indicates) I tightened the clamp and the ticking was gone. I did this yesterday afternoon. Also checked the rest and they were fine. Saved $300 bucks!!! Final cost was nothing but time...........
Good luck with yours. Hope its an easy fix. Good place to start

i had a ticking noise on my way to fl last year meltdown cut valve in half 15;000 dollar motor arghhh

Thanks so much StoupDog you were 100% correct #4 was loose to the touch I re tighten all of them especially number four. We are back up and running like new. Thanks for the post:
