i put a valair single disc behind my 05 and so far i like it. only thing i dont like is its real grabby in reverse. its rated for 600 horse and 1100 ft./lb. and i got it for under $500.

that was for a 6 speed tho.

what is the best smarty to get? i noticed theres jr sr? I want one with a pod
that has gauges incorporated into it and what not. Whats everybody running?

I want to start with a chip and go from there. Eventually lift pump, injectors, a good single charger, etc. Trying to get some ideas

played around last night and noticed that the weird idle goes away if i put a bit of a load on it while its idling like that (let the clutch out somewhat quick or in a high gear, or if i just bog it down while idling in gear by hitting the brake). I tried to reset the TPS. Not sure if its supposed to react in any special way or not but it didn't help. I was thinking about recording it and uploading it to see if anybody knows whats wrong

looking at valair's 550hp 1100ft/lb clutch. Gonna be around $500. Been doing some reasearch and am convinced on a smarty s-06.

Now my buddy has a used s-06 he would sell me for $600 in mint condition with the case and everything. Is there any risk at buying one of these used?

Thanks for the input!!

I just put a valair single disc in my truck a few months ago, love the clutch but it's defineatly engage or disengage, no slipping that clutch! As far as the smarty, should be no problems at all buying a used one unless it looks beat to he'll, or vin locked, other than that should be fine. I would also look into the industrial injection cp3 bag o parts greatly increase the life and performance of you injection pump.

A lot of people seem to worship the Smarty. I've never had one so I can't comment one way or the other. Just keep in mind you HAVE to have gauges to monitor your vitals when using one and the discipline to watch them while driving/towing/playing or risk melting something down.

An 03,eh? great choice. Welcome! It's a great block, but the computer doesn't have the same diagnostic capability as the 05 and newer. That hasn't been a big issue for me, and mine has been a great truck for 180,000 miles. so far, I've done a cold air intake, 4" exhaust, edge ez, airdog 150, and 50 horse sticks. The injectors on the common rail are VERY sensitive to contaminates, and by the sound of it, you are due for some new ones. When you do it, don't forget to upgrade the fuel system with a fass or airdog- that will help keep the fuel supply clean and consistent. As for the chip, you might look into efi live, though I'm not certain the computer on the 03 will support it. I'm sure someone on this site can answer that. If I were to replace mine, it would be with one of the smarties. Edge is a good product, but their service / support is unimpressive! Talk to the guys at Touque Diesel about what products work well together. Guages are a must- especially when you start fooling with the fueling map- the egt's come up quick. good luck, and keep us posted.

Im really having a hard time getting convinced its a bad injector. The truck runs and goes great. It seems like its an electrical problem to me like a sensor or whatever controls idle. Im going to change my tps here soon and see what that does. As far as mods im heading for a smarty s06, valair single, fass 150, ii bag o parts. in that order.

Appreciate the responses guys!!

I'm thinking the truck is already chipped. My pod does that if I run the truck hard and shift fast. Is there a light haze of smoke coming out of the exhaust at cruising speeds?

you know i was kinda wondering the same thing. It cant though. its pretty guttless and zero smoke. It was a company/business vehicle so im sure it isn't. Truck kinda has a mind of its own. If i let the clutch out in second gear from a stop it really takes off. i know its supposed to do that but it really goes....like i have to touch the brake sometimes or if i touch the gas it will stop
