Trade it in on a 4X4......a lot of work, headache, and expense..........trust me.......even on a simple 70 GMC.

You would need front axle, all front suspension, transfer case, drive shaft,s interior parts like floor consoles and then you gotta hack you old suspension and mounts off and fab all new stuff. Way to much work if you ask me unless you have the skills necessary to do it and can afford the down time on the truck. Plus I'm sure just factory parts will be in the several thousand dollar range for just the axle and transfer case. Would be nice to see a write up on it if you do tackle it though

I did this on my ole 99.

axle $350
divorced NP205 $250 (foor mount cable shift)
Rebuild kit for NP205 $145 (was just in case)
drive shaft $200
Deaver front and rear 8" mini pack lift leaf springs $3400
and what ever you charge yourself for labor $$$$$ mine labor was free

With my buddies helping it took two full beer drinking weekends. and never a problem with it.

under 5K is a lot cheaper than a new truck
