A catalyst is not a filter. Again, NOX cannot be filtered it can only caltalyzed out of the exhaust stream.

i call all of them filters . You know alot more about this then me, so my question is how is it caltalyzed out of the exhaust, i know how the filters work but could you explain the other, of how it works. thanks

The last I heard the medium duty Dodges are already slated for urea injection in 2012. Cummins is not getting caught behind the curve here, their engineering is keeping them ahead of the curve without having to resort to add-ons to remedy the short comings.

An engine is a complete system WITHOUT after treatment add-ons and thats the simple truth. Engineered correctly a minimum of after treatment add-ons are required to meet the current emissions regs. If you don't meet them, like the others can't, you add more crap to meet the regs. Where is the sense or even progress in that? When the regs tighten, and thats published way ahead of time, then is the time to use the band-aid add-ons of needed.

Every one of these systems is purely a bandaid. It simply extends the reliance on fossil fuels instead of driving the developemnt of cleaner burning bio fuels that do not require as much crap to keep the emissions in check. Thats the real story behind all this and what will eventually cost us more $$ than I want to contemplate.

Again, adding more complex emissions sytems is NOT a step forward. There is ample evidence to prove the pain in that theory with ALL the diesel trucks out there. Growing pains are simply unavoidable and the way things are going we WILL pay for the pain, the problems, and the cure. I am not at all happy with that reality.

Perhaps, it looks as though it isn't a step forward but I still believe it is with what I know is coming down the pipe so to speak.

I do think that you may be incorrect in your statement of Cummins with regards to the W/O after treatment since it has all the same (minus urea) as say Ford. The entire system is inclusive of the fuel and add's in, the block and the exhaust out. I do agree however that the regs are published well in advance and that companies should be able to respond well in advance of that if they actually knew what they were doing but since few truly do lack vision and so on it is going to take this "backwards" approach to get them to think outside the box. The thing is, if they just looked at other places around the big ol' world they wouldn't have to think so hard. It has been done, proven and is reliable (urea injection) in Europe for almost 15 years and here we bitch about change...
