Default Fuel Gauge?

For the past 3 weeks, the fuel gauge in my wife's 2004 2500 has been intermittently going out. So I pulled the bed off yesterday, went to auto zone and bought a new sending unit/lift pump for $220. When I got home and installed it, it didn't change a thing. So my question is, could it be the gauge on the cluster itself?

BTW, I have a brand new sending unit/lift pump for sale (Auto Zone wouldn't take it back), I had it in the truck for roughly 10-15 seconds. $190, and that includes shipping inside the U.S.
