I just bought a 2003 Ram 3500 with auto trans and want to change over to Amsoil fluid.
I know just a little about flush machines. There are 2 kinds. One you don't want used and the other. One flushes through the cooler - you don't want this kind of machine used on your transmission. The other requires the pan be dropped and the filter removed. The line from the flush machine is attached to the tranny pump inlet.
This is supposed to completely remove all the old fluid without pushing crud through the cooler. Even so, if I'm not mistaken you can get kits that just flush the cooler.
Since I have not done this yet - I'm sure open to suggestions. My truck has 80000 miles on it and I don't know if the transmission fluid or filter have ever been changed.
I hate to have to spend a small fortune on a shop service and all new oil but I would hate less to have to buy a new transmission this early in the game with a new to me truck.
Thanks
Ron

I think I would rather you pull the pan and adjust the bands than worry about that other few quarts of atf.

If it's a stock tranny and has been used at all with a power adder it's probably toast! BUT if you drop the pan and it's not full of crud and pieces then I would buy a valve body and TQ. Talk to Goerend for the best help and suggestions for making your tranny live a happy LONG life!

Default Tierd Tranny topic

This truck does have the stock tranny but has never had a tuner/chip. Only the freeflow intake and exhaust - stock size tires.
I have a extra capacity oil pan to put on it so can adjust the bands then.
Is mixing any brand of synthetic with the original fluid apt to cause problems?

X2^^ but +4 is all the same only one maker that sells to ALL the distributors so Mopar and walmart are the same! Chrysler had a monopoly until they got sued by everyone that wanted to sell it!

Trans builders are still swearing that the additive package isn't the same. We mostly use advance brand but some converter company's request brand name for warranty reasons.

What about the (I know I'm going to get this name wrong - ) M - Morrison act that spanked auto makers AND Harley Davidson for voiding warranty when not using thier branded oils. I got told the same thing from a Harley dealer years ago - the additive package is just for the hot running air cooled Harley engine. In 1984 I bought a new Evolution powered Harley - when to Amsoil - put 150+ miles on the engine, tore it down for some High perf work and found all wear was still within operational specs.
Still - it makes you worry given the cost of a new transmission or rebuild!
