#4 Injector Line

For anyone out there who doesn't want to be stuck on the side of the road, check the clamp on the #4 injector line. Today, I was driving down the road and my truck died. Pulled over, popped the hood, smelled fuel. With a little further investigation, found my #4 injector line in two pieces. The clamp was laying underneath it. I got really lucky and a passerby stopped to see if I needed a hand. He had a friend that worked at the Cummins shop and what do you know, he had the part. The parts man also told me there is a three week nationwide back-order on them.
Moral of the story, check the clamp, and order one just in case... They're only $25.00

I like to see some pictures of this, and was it the clamp or the hose that blew and why only on number 4

millco 10-15-2009 05:38 PM

Yes! Thanks!!
Pics would be great!

(I think there is some sort of 'defect' here.... Can't remember where I read it; but, it seems like this is a common problem.)

Guess I better go check mine.....
How many miles on yours (to cause this)?

darkhorse06 10-18-2009 09:20 PM

I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow. My truck has 127,000 I'm almost certain it is a defective clamp because the new part comes with the clamp included and it has been redesigned. I'm not certain why it is just the #4 line. It might be others too. The parts dealer told me he has only sold the #4 though. The line itself broke on the injector side 1/4 inch from the nut. I've checked of few of my friends trucks and one of them had a loose clamp. Hope this saves some of you the headache/heartache on the side of the road.

ROCKITV8 11-29-2009 08:22 AM

I would like to see a pic as well

thebreeze04 11-29-2009 05:25 PM

The #4 line had been replaced on mine before I got the truck, seems to be a semi-common problem

Buck08 11-29-2009 05:47 PM

Clamp can come loose and rub through or break off close to the end of the line. I checck any CR I work on. Found 3 loose clamps so far

mikmaze 11-29-2009 05:49 PM

signs of a loose clamp are a loud valve tap style noise, that goes away when you turn the radio up, but that is not the best way at all to fix it, clamps off older motors will work and easy to carry for use in a pinch.

harry22 01-13-2010 10:12 AM

anybody have any pics of this yet?

I am also still waiting to see a picture of this clamp and where it is located.

darkhorse06 02-02-2010 06:39 PM

Sorry guys, I can't seem to get the pics uploaded. They are very easy to locate though. The sit close the the valve cover on the drivers side of the engine. The lines are aluminum and the clamps are blue. Check the bolts in all them to make sure they are tight to save yourselves some trouble...

Rod Burner 03-19-2010 03:50 PM

When you shake rattle and roll something is coming loose.
Always check your check nuts.
:c:

I should have read this before I sold the #4 line off my core motor. Maybe I should have kept it for myself because now I will prolby need it hahaha.

I can snap a pic of the bracket off my core motor, but dont have the line anymore

NadirPoint 06-25-2010 12:02 PM

I had them all off installing w/m injectors in the manifold cover a couple weeks ago and loctited all the hold down bolts when I reassembled them. Not hard to do, and should prevent this ever happening.

DIESELPOWER4U2 07-16-2010 07:19 PM

HAVE AN 04.5 CUMMINS. CHANGED OIL LAST WEEK, AND HAD AT LEAST 2, IF NOT THREE QTS OF DIESEL MIXED WITH. YOU CAN IMAGINE MY EXITMENT, ANY IDEAS MOTOR RUNS SMOOTH BUT SEEMS TO BE SMOKING ALOT UNDER LOAD, STUCK INJECTOR? OR FUEL LINE??? SEEMS LIKE ALOT OF FUEL IN 3,500 MILES BETWEEN OIL CHANGE,WHERE DO I START.

coors_man_2005 07-20-2010 08:34 PM

so is the ony reason these are breaking cause there coming loose my buddy has been threw god knows how many break every time prolly 5 that i know of its been enough that the dealer ship dont even charge him for them any more it happens so often let me know thanks alot:c:

spike7ss 07-21-2010 12:05 AM

whitelightning 07-24-2010 10:04 PM

mopo824 08-02-2010 08:02 PM

had the same thing happen to me not to long ago and i was umm about 9 hrs from home lol out in the middle of no where and had to replace the whole line

qman 08-02-2010 11:53 PM

mine broke last week. I had just hooked up to my loaded Dump Trailer, was pulling it out and smelled fuel. Shut the truck down and jumped out. Found the loose clamp and leaking #4 line. Glad I was in town when it happened, i had been camping with my son the weekend before.

Fatboy's Cummins 09-08-2010 02:15 PM

had this happen last week and it sucked bad gave $46 bucks for the new one and parts man said they keep them in stock cause it happens all the time !!!!!! so im gonna order a spare :nope::tu:

spike7ss 09-08-2010 07:10 PM

I now have one under the back seat in my truck............just in case

xXHoPXx 10-10-2010 03:07 PM

Does anyone have any pics of where the clamp is?

cummin_un_glued 10-10-2010 05:32 PM

look at your fuel rail it will be the only clamp on the #4 line...8mm to tighten the bolt that go's thru it and 10mm to tighten the bolt that holds it to the intake plate on the head

skinnysfd 10-10-2010 05:35 PM

the clamp has two blue squares that hold it to the line and it is held on by one bolt. Mine just blew last week $20 dollars for a new one at diesel specialities here so i bought a couple for the other trucks too.

TeckJohn 01-31-2011 04:45 PM

I had the number 5 line break on mine

LoneOakCummins21 03-14-2011 04:11 PM

that wouldnt cause fuel to get into the crank case would it?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

im asking because my 05 had fuel in the crank case but i never thought to check somthin like that

jminter 07-28-2011 08:15 PM

Mine blew the day i bought the truck wash forever to get the diesel smell gone sitting on the side of the road in 106 temp first day with the truck almost went back to stroking

roaddog51 01-29-2012 11:52 AM

I to had the same problem with my #4 last week spraying fuel all over everything :scare2:and it was a loose injector clamp. parts man said it was a common problem with the 5.9 so he kept a few in stock at 65. a pop. you get a new clamp and bracket with the new one and looks like they changed the clamp screw on the bracket.. mine broke where it screws on to the injector..truck has 93000 miles on it...

03_2500 02-23-2012 09:49 AM

its a more commin thing then you think my father in law has a shop and thats all he wrks on is cummins and i have replaced more then a few last year

davesupra 04-26-2012 02:50 PM

I just bought my truck last week and after reading this thread I decided to check the bolts on my truck. Sure enough, #4 was loose. Thanks a bunch for this great tip.

Bigg Redd 05-07-2012 10:01 PM

Yep! Happened to my dad 3 times and all three times resulted in a piggy-back ride on a tow truck. What is it with the #4 clamp?:humm: My #4 clamp has gotten loose twice, but I've never blown a line. Just lucky I guess. :w2:

94CTD 05-30-2012 02:53 AM

We've had 3 of them go at work in the year and a half i've been there.

bddpowerstroke 06-02-2012 06:46 PM

This just happend to my dad a week ago, we replaced the line know truck wont start and the engine light is flashing on and off. pluss a ticking noise is coming from the sylonoid by the air intake.Cant even check the codes with computer just reading "error" Any Ideas?

jrichard5.9L 07-20-2012 07:19 PM

It is my understanding that if your #4 injector line has not broke yet it will. Mine went out on me in Brackettville, Texas 7 hours from home and the closest replacement was in Del Rio 45 minutes away. A local gentleman gave me a ride to Del Rio to pick the last one they had up. As soon as I got home I bought an extra to keep in the truck. I was told that it had something to do with the harmonics and all my clamps were tight.

Bigg Redd 08-21-2012 10:53 PM

Its enough to piss the Pope off!

dog 10-08-2012 12:29 PM

Had this exact problem the other day! And in the middle of nowhere no doubt!:argh:

Bigg Redd 10-08-2012 02:54 PM

I guess I should just bite the bullet adn get one....soon. Been putting it off. :nope:

gcbc67 01-16-2013 08:26 PM
