04.5 cp3 pump

im really at a loss about my truck, while im driving down the hwy, the motor just seems to go dead for a sec then runs fine like nothing happened. the check engine light comes on and when i have it checked it comes up as the cp3 pump regulator control. this has happened a number of times. does this regulator go bad slowly or will it leave me stranded all of a sudden? also is there an aftermarket pump that will fix this problem so i dont have to deal with the factory one? my truck is mostly stock, no chip or anything and about 65k on it thanx for the help
the code came up as p0251 and said cp3 pump regulator, do these go bad ar is it common for them to go bad at 66000 miles? was also wondering if i should be using a fuel additive for lubrication?
