Bomb The Never Ending Code

Like it says, from time to time usually when I romp on it to pass cars *past 4 times now* I get that lil fancy orange light with a P0336 crankshaft position sensor A circuit range/performance. The truck had the CPS replaced once b4 I bought it by the previous owner *friend* and it still rears it ugly head. But I clear the code with the Smarty and it stays clear until whenever it decides to throw it again. From time to time it does sound what I think is timing rattle down low in the rpms and at idle. Any insite on this, its starting to get alil annoying.

i would say replace it again just to see and get in there and check the wireing harness really good, if its anything like the way the 24v are it may not be possible to check it real good.

Says to disconnect the CPS and both ECM connectors to inspect and clean. Give that a shot and see what happens.

THAT CODE CAN ALSO BE CAUSED BY THE CLUTCH IF ITS A MANUAL TRANS. WHEN THE DUEL MAS FLYWHEEL STARTS TO COME APART IT THROWS OFF THE ENGINE AND THROWS THAT CODE. WHEN THAT CODE SETS DOES THE ENGINE SHAKE? I HAVE SEEN THIS HAPPEN.

Inspect the wiring up around the A/C compressor. I bet some of the wires are chaffed and coated in oil.

Cummins tech is right, That has been seen before.

The range and performance part of the code tell's us the sensor is most likely functioning correctly, just not getting the correct reading.

Lets start with the description of what it does: The CKP contains a hall effect device. A rotating, notched target wheel (tonewheel) for the CKP is located behind the engine harmonic balancer (2). This hall effect device detects notches located on the tonewheel. As the tonewheel rotates, the notches pass the tip of the CKP.

When the leading edge of the tonewheel notch passes the tip of the CKP, the following occurs: The interruption of magnetic field causes the voltage to switch high resulting in a signal of approximately 5 volts .

When the trailing edge of the tonewheel notch passes the tip of the CKP, the following occurs: The change of the magnetic field causes the signal voltage to switch low to 0 volts .

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) also provides a signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM) at all times when the engine is running. The ECM uses this CMP information primarily on engine start-up. Once the engine is running, the ECM uses the CMP as a backup sensor for engine speed.
Now, We'll get to the diagnoses
Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding.

DIAGNOSTIC TEST

1. CKP SENSOR
Disconnect the CKP sensor harness connector.

NOTE: Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.

Measure the resistance between the (K853) 5-volt supply circuit and the (K24) signal circuit of the sensor.

Q: Is the resistance between 900 and 1100 ohms?

YES: Go To 2
NO: Replace the CKP sensor. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

2. (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN

Disconnect the ECM harness connectors.
Disconnect the CKP sensor harness connector.
Check connectors - Clean/repair as necessary.
Measure the resistance of the (K24) signal circuit between the ECM harness connector and the CKP sensor harness connector.

Q: Is the resistance less than 10 ohms?

YES: Go To 3
NO: Repair the open (K24) signal circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

3. (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN

Measure the resistance of the (K853) 5-volt supply circuit between the ECM harness connector and the CKP sensor harness connector.

Q: Is the resistance less than 10 ohms?

YES: Go To 4
NO: Repair the open (K853) 5-volt supply circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

4. (K975) RETURN CIRCUIT OPEN

Measure the resistance of the (K975) return circuit between the ECM harness connector and the CKP sensor harness connector.

Q: Is the resistance less than 10 ohms?

YES: Go To 5
NO: Repair the open (K975) return circuit. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

5. (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K975) RETURN CIRCUIT

POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL)

Clear the DTC before continuing.
Check if any of the following conditions exist.
The ECM has been disconnected or replaced.
The battery power has been disconnected.
If the ECM has been replaced, do the following:
For ABS and Airbag Systems: Action: Enter correct VIN and Mileage in ECM. Erase ABS and Airbag Module codes. NOTE: 7 . If the Engine Control Module has been replaced and the correct VIN and mileage have not been programmed, a DTC will be set in the ABS, Airbag Modules and SKIM module.
If the ECM has not been replaced, do the following.
Inspect the vehicles to ensure that all engine components are connected. Reassemble and reconnect components as necessary.
Attempt to start the engine.
If the engine is unable to start, look for any Technical Service Bulletins that may relate to this condition. Return to Symptom list if necessary.
If the there are no DTCs present and all components are functional, the repair is complete.

I've spent alot of time trying to prove the manual wrong....It always wins

Measure the resistance between the (K24) signal circuit and the (K975) return circuit in the sensor connector.

Q: Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms?

YES: Go To 6
NO: Repair the short circuit or replace the engine harness. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

6. (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K975) RETURN CIRCUIT

Measure the resistance between the (K853) 5-volt supply circuit and the (K975) return circuit in the sensor connector.

Q: Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms?

YES: Go To 7
NO: Repair the short circuit or replace the engine harness. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

7. (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED GROUND

Measure the resistance between the (K24) signal circuit and ground.

Q: Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms?

YES: Go To 8
NO: Repair the short circuit or replace the engine harness. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

8. (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND

Measure the resistance between the (K853) 5-volt supply circuit and ground.

Q: Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms?

YES: Go To 9
NO: Repair the short circuit or replace the engine harness. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

9. (K24) SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO (K853) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT

Measure the resistance between the (K24) signal circuit and the (K853) 5-volt supply circuit in the sensor connector.

Q: Is the resistance greater than 100k Ohms?

YES: Go To 10
NO: Repair the short circuit or replace the engine harness. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).

ECM
Reconnect the ECM harness connectors.
Ignition on, engine not running.
With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
Connect a jumper wire between the sensor supply circuit and the sensor return circuit in the sensor harness connector.

Q: Did DTC P0337 set?

YES: Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION Symptom (Diagnostic Procedure). See: Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview\Diagnostic Strategies
NO: Replace the ECM. Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL
