2005 5.9 Cummins Broken Crankshaft
Hello all.
Im looking for advice with my 2005 cummins.
Ill let you know a bit about my Truck.
333000km ive owned since 170000km
muffler delete
Superchips on either tow mode or performance
Airade air filter and tube
some towing but mostly just spirited daily driving
Recently i had vibrations from drivetrain and discovered the welds starting to break between flexplate and torque converter.
So being original i told the transmission to rebuilt with whatever stuff it needed to handle more power. Flexplate torque converter internals valve body etc. Rear crank seal.
picked up the truck and about 500km later at about 40km/h i gave the throttle a blip coming through an intersection and it seemed to lock up the coverter or something and wanted to rev.. So i held it back with the brakes and came to a stop and shut down the motor. Upon restarting it made the same similar noise as before with loose flexplate.. So i idled it the 20 blocks back to the transmission shop.
And guess what.. Not the flexplate.. I have a broken crank. I pulled the motor and tore it down. Broken between main #5 and #6 rod journal. And almost no metal chunck in the pan.. Just some main thrust bearing wear from the crank break.
everything else looks very good. Even pulled the cam and it looks great.
So im looking for a crank and found a nice 12v bottom end.. Crank rods etc..
and would like to use these parts.
was going to find a CR crank but would like to beef up the bottom end at this point.
and upgrade a few other parts while i have it torn down..

..
So my question is.. If im going to use the 12v crank and rods. Will i have balance issues? Should the wrist pins pistons be a direct swap on the 12v rods?
Is it pretty straight forward to swaping out the front crank gear? I realize theres is some modding involved in using the 12v crank. But from my understanding it should be and easy enough swap.
Am i missing anything?
Thanks
