Default Key Counts

I know that most all programers wipe out the key counts when you install / change programs. What about when you disconnect the batteries? Does this reset the key counts at that time too? What else resets the key counts?

That depends. I have seen it where removing the batteries does and does not. Basically your best attempt should you need to do that is to disconnect the batteries for at least a 24 hour period.

Now the trouble there is that if you are worried about something in particular the short term memory will erase but the long term (accessed only by that STAR reader - about the size of a small car) will find the difference and report a non-conformance. This is seldom done but can be used to void your warranty.

The best programmer out there for 99% worry free writes is the smarty box.

Not only do inferior programmers reset key counts, but they can burn the ECM out. Both will void the warranty as we know.

That's what I'm concerned about. I didn't know if I had an issue if there was an excuse for low key counts, other than having a programmer.

If you want an awesome programmer that doesn't reset key counts, only one word. Smarty!

so is key counts just turning the key on and off? What's so bad about that?

Well if they get reset to 0, they'll know something was stuck in the ECM.
