Default Another vp44 questions

I am new to electronic diesels, so this electronic LP and VP44 stuff is alien to me. On the other hand, I have done quite a bit of injected gas performance work. My questions are; why doesn't the LP run when the key is turned to ignition on like a gas injected system typically does? Wouldn't that ensure there is fuel pressure getting into the vp44 prior to running? I have a Ford Ranger with a vortech supercharger system and a pump on the frame to boost fuel pressure. It kicks on with the ignition to be certain there is plenty of pressure.

I just bought an '01 5 days ago with 50,000 miles, currently getting a new vp44 and a frame mounted aftermarket LP after the dead pedal accompanied by a p0216 death code. This was a real kick in the pants to say the least as I have been looking for cummins power for 2 years. I would appreciate any tips on keeping the VP44 happy.

you have done all you can do, i'd suggest a fuel pressure guage or warning light and i would suggest not using any "chips" that tap the pump wire

Going to get a mechanical FP guage on it as soon as I get it home for sure. Definitely leaving this truck stock, bought it for daily driving and towing my boat around the state. What about an additional filter/water separator? Down here in FL with high humidity and algae is common.

I would also suggest a FASS fuel system. This will add the extra filtration.

fass and airdog both do a good job filtering

Did i miss something here guys ?? I know with my AirDog LP as soon as I turn the ignition on, I feel and hear it kick on before I start it.

It will run 0-30 seconds depending on what revision is in the pcm. With that said the lift pump circuit is known to fail.

mysterync is right on the lift pump circuit. you can wire around this if that is the trouble.

The way I understand it is you don't want the pump running constantly before a start so you don't pressure lock the VP, It should come on and provide start up pressure, shutdown and then restart after it senses the engine starting/running.

Could I be wrong? (probably).

And as stated, get a fuel pressure gauge, probably one of the top gauges I keep tabs on. I don't not trust lights, especially with the kits that are offered.

Not saying your wrong but with a pump constantly running before start up will ruin the diaphragm before lock it up. I have a Holley black in my truck it kicks on for about 2 sec when I turn the key the edge shows 1 psi. I tried one day a bumped the starter to kick on pump and instantly went to 20 psi so I never done that again.

IMO if you are replacing the VP I would spend the extra$$ and get an air dog or fass.

As for chips that tap the pump if you have the fuel to support the VP there is nothing wrong with them. The only problem is your tranny that is my problem now. Now my Holley will barley support the fuel I use at WOT it pulls down to 10 psi.
