Well its more of an opinion really. Alot of guys swapping to the p pump will site reliability as one reason if not the main reason for the swap. I dont think 650-700 would be attainable with a stock vp, maybe a hot rod could get you there and the heavily modified pumps give very little reliability especially on a daily driver. Ive seen them have to be sent off within 2000 miles of running. If your happy with a vp pump then please overlook those of us who differ in opinion with you. I do think they suck but, I wouldnt tell someone not to buy a vp truck because of it.

Stock output VPs found in 98.5-02 24 valves with automatics and 5 speeds can handle up to 650hp, if you honstely thing that buying a "hot rod" vp is a good way to increase horsepower you just wasted $1800. Stock VP's are very reliable and the only reason P7100s outlast vps is because they are all mechanical. Plus you can have custom tuning and programmers with vps where p pumps you gotta turn fuel screw or slide plate.

The VP44 is a good injection pump. I wouldnt push a stock VP to 650hp and expect it to last though. They can handle 450-500hp and still be reliable. The factory lift pump is the big issue. Low fuel pressure leads to the bladder inside cracking and breaking in the VP because it was never designed to pull fuel from the tank as well as push it to the injectors. If a lift pump is installed soon enough, a VP can last up to 300-350K miles depending on things. However if you get one at 150K and someone else slapped a tuner on it without the lift pump replaced, damage is done.

Ran and abused a 2001 stock 24 valve with a VP. Ran thousands of gallons of salvage
boat diesel sometimes mixed with old motor oil. Had foot pump (mechanical on block)
That went out at 150K. Drove another 100K with cheapest inline electric my local parts house had. Many contamination and water in fuel issues. Just kept on running. Just traded to get that 01 cab and chassis back, but the engine is now running hot shot in another.

Probably not many guys here running stock configuration with upgraded fuel pumps and lines. Most bad experiences are probably due to HP upgrades with stock VP. I intend to only make efficiency upgrades.
