TOWING IN OD
HEY GUYS,IM ABOUT TO TO ON A TRIP HAULING A 30 TRAVEL TRAILER (WEIGHS ABOUT 8000 lbs).DO YOU THINK IT IS OKAY TO TOW IN OD OR IS TOWING IN TOW MODE ABOUT THE SAME MPG?(JUST TRYING TO SAVE A LITTLE MONEY ON FUEL)THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE
I have not hesitated to tow in OD. Most of my towing has been after the Dunrite VB was installed which alleviates most of the issues. Main concern it seems is the Stock VB does not allow enough pressure at low RPM towing and that can lead to trouble.
We did it for a long time with a stock tranny before it died, I'm sure towing in OD didnt help it any but wasnt the main cause either.
I would downshift for big hills and keep an eye on the tranny temp gauge if you have one. If you are worried about slipping the OD or torque converter cluches, its pretty easy to feel when it does happen, for me anyways. If you do think you feel slippage, stop doing whatever it is that makes it slip, they dont like that at all.
