alright so im one step further if thats what youd call it. i came across a scanner, plugged it in and it had no present codes. i called the diesel shop that worked on the truck he told me it had a code for a crank pos sensor and a code for a weak fuel pump when he had the truck.
my guess is afterr installing the sensor he cleared the codes, the truck drove for a week or so after he installed the sensor. maybe the code for the weak pump didnt register back in due to not enough drive time? and the pump finally **** out and it wont start? the truck died at idle and never would restart, but still i would think if the pump did die a code would read. im kind of lost at this point , any advice appreciated

so they are known to die without codes? likely thats why the truck shut down at idle? weird though the truckl had a code for a weak pump 3 weeks ago, he cleared it. truck had no loss of power, i had a 2000 6 months ago that had a weak pump that use to get a "dead pedal" time to time, but always did start

is there any way i can somewhat confirm its the pump? i hate to pay $5500, $1500 for a new pump, and have a 24v that wont fire

Usually pretty easy to check really. First check the fuel relay in the power distribution center to make sure it's energized, you can swap it with the horn relay. If it is, you can check to make sure you have fuel pressure to the inlet of the VP44 while cranking, if you do, then you can crack a few injector lines at the head and see if you have fuel there; most likely you won't. You will need to eliminate all other issues before checking the fuel lines though, or the problem could lie elsewhere. There is a way to energize the VP44 independently from the ECM to make certain it's not another issue. Don't have my notes with me for that right at the moment, but I will look them up and post this evening.

so if the fuel relays junk she aint starting, say the relay died with the truck running, it would shut off correct?

and this would be in the fusebox under the hood right? im going to check this out tomoro

You are correct on both counts. Could be the relay, could be a sensor not working (usually cam position sensor) and thus the ECM is not sending signals to the VP44. For some reason I don't have my schematics handy on how to bypass the ECM to enable the VP44 to run independently. I do know it is pins 7 and 8, but I can't remember which one is energized and which one is ground. I will post back just as soon as I get my hands on those darn schematics... sorry about the delay.
