Well... I'm sorry, but I'm not one to fix something that ain't broken... Your lift pump system is broken, your injection pump isn't.

While a new VP would be nice, its not necessary until the old one is shot. I'll kill mine before I replace it. You're never gonna get much over core for a used VP anyways.

i dont like to fix anything that is not broken either, so basically my pressure is good per factory. I dont exactly have the money to upgrade to the airdog right now. But mabey this summer. If i didnt have a dually then mabey i would be more than willing upgrade. Just not a big fan of the dually.

I had noticed that the previous owner had installed a low pressure light.(i found it in the fuse panel and pulled it out so i could see the light.) I was just driving the truck around today and i could get the light to come on with only about little over half throttle. I would think that if that light is coming on at all that is really bad. looks like i might be selling something to get the airdog!

The light come on when pressure drops below 5psi. Time for a new lift pump.

What are best options for lift pump replacement, i.e. price, performance, easy of install, reliability?

Had the truck I'm about to buy at the dealership today. Flow test was good, but they said that it's making some noise and may be on its way out. They want to put a Mopar "upgrade" in the tank.

Discuss.

The flow test at the dealership means nothing. You want to have a minimum amount of pressure at wide open throttle. Especially if you have any performance mods (or any planned). The intank pump is garbage - doesnt supply enough fuel to lube and cool the injector pump. Run far, far away from the dealership - do the work yourself and save yourself a bunch of money.

IMHO, there are 3 good options for lift pump replacement. Airdog, Mitusa (a complete mechanical pump - not electric like all the others), and FASS. Both the Airdog and Fass units have a lifetime warranty on the pump itself (I imagine the Mitusa is the same).

Expect to pay around $500. But its pretty much a one time investment. And I take it - you dont have a fuel pressure guage in the cab - this is an absolute MUST.

Believe me, if I thought I could handle opening the tranny and fixing this 5th gear nut issue, I would, but I've never opened a box before and wouldn't know where to start. That being said, the tranny work will probably be the only work I have them do. The lift pump doesn't look that difficult, and I've dropped a few tanks in my time.

No gauges yet, because I haven't bought the truck yet. As soon as I buy it though, the first upgrades after the tranny's fixed will be a full set of gauges. Planning for fuel pressure, EGT, and boost at a minimum.

ok - good deal.

I wouldnt be very enthusiastic to tackle a tranny either - but if you can change your own oil, you wont have much trouble with putting a good lift pump on.

You may or may not have to drop the tank - depending on what pump you buy (but I thin its a good idea to actually drop it).

We have lots of threads on this and lots of knowledge in this area. As well, we have sponsors that can supply everything and anything youd need to do the job.
