fuel pump
 

I have an 01 ram with the fuel pump in the tank. My fuel pressure is around 10 to 11 at idle and 5 to 6 at WOT, i have been told this is not good and i need a new pump. I am not sure what kind to look for and how hard they are to hook up. The truck is almost stock except for the banks exhaust. Any info would be nice thanks.

Can i still drive the truck how it is now?

Your 10-11 at idle isn't to bad (I like to see at least 15) but the 5-6 at wot is low. I would look at getting a airdog or fass system. Neither are to difficult to install. I'm sure some of our sponsors here would be willing to give you some price quotes and answer any questions you may have on the install:U:

would i have to take out the pump in the tank?

Depends on what setup you go with, but most of them have options for leaving the in-tank pump in place. I would suggest an aftermarket lift pump if you see less than 10PSI at the VP44 at any time.

Second that.....Are you planning on building your truck up for more power down the road? It could help out by knowing this as well when you go to select an either an Airdog or Fass as they have different set ups. Good luck.

Airdog or Fass would be your best choice. They both include the draw tube to replace your intake pump.

you have to remove the tank to do a install with an in tank pump.

When I bought my '01 it came with a pump in the tank. It was weak, and fuel presure would drop to 0 :booo: at WOT!! I quickly remedied this by installing a second fuel pump on the block where the factory pump would go. These two pumps are now working together in series, and produce 29Psi at idle, and still make 17Psi with my chip set to level 5, and my foot all the way to the floor. I made a "Y" harness to share power form the ECU to each fuel pump. Works very well, and is A LOT cheaper than a FASS or AirDog. I do have plans to upgrade to a FASS, as I do not believe these pumps will keep up to the fueling requirements of future upgrades.

Umm, 29PSI on a VP is too much. You can blow the seals out of the VP if you spike. Imagine barking the turbo, all that air pressure slams the compressor wheel forcing it to stop. Now imagine going from full throttle and fuel flow to almost nothing. Fuel stops just as hard. I can watch my gauge go from 13.5 psi at idle to 12 at WOT to over 15 when I let off. Obviously its not a good idea to run too much pressure.

Anybody seen these yet? Wonder how they'd do for a diesel.

They don't seem to hold up very well for the long haul. It's this type pump most people were using before Airdog and FASS came along. They had a bad reputation for failing early as I recall... :humm:
