horsepower
I recently bought a 2001 2500 quad cab 4x4 automatic. It has 50hp injectors, airdog 100 with big lines, 4 in exhaust from turbo back and a k&n air filter. Im looking to get between 500 and 600 hp. About what am i at now and what should i change to get where i want to be. Thanks

This question comes up so much we need a graph to find avg horsepower with certain combinations and sticky it hahahha.
500 to 600 hp hummm I would beef up the trans/converter with some billet parts first then do a mighty diesel head stud kit, 150/200hp showerheads, perhaps compound turbos set up. A decent intake and exhaust manifold, intake heater delete/spacer. That would get you there!

400 hp pushes the limit of a stock transmission in the autos you need billet wheels in the converter and billet input and output shafts. Most of the time it is easier to purchase a built transmission.
On the NV4500 and 5600 manual transmission side usually the weak link is the 5th gear on the 4500 and the 12" clutch not holding the torque increase.
I would start with a good trans and then mod away if you want it to hold up for a long time.
I would say your truck is probably pushing 325- 350hp now with the edge juice turned up
that's a pretty good place to be. maybe get a smarty tuner to add on.

Anything over stock on an auto and about 50hp+- on a manual is pushing it. But to get a transmission to hold 500hp for an auto will run about $4500+ and a manual will cost roughly $1500-2000. Id say with 50 hp injectors and the EJWA you are maybe looking at 300hp. There are many different tried and true methods of reaching 500hp.

Your absolutely right anything over stock hp is gonna wear out a trans/clutch quicker. The 12" clutch in my truck was slipping with just some RV275's (which isn't even 50 hp) nozzles.
I would say that an 48RE might hold brief periods at 300 hp (cause most guys running programmers they bought at autozone don't know any different). Sure the trans is gonna get hot and fry but it would run for a little while . But I would imagine that a catastrophic failure like a broke shaft, exploded spragg or worse the torque converter shelling would probably happen up around 400 hp. I wonder what kind of torque would break a 47RE 650? 750 lbs?
