Since the noise increases at low fuel levels, I am betting the pump is cavitating. No amount of air removing technology will stop the air hammering sounds.

If you are using the stock module, it is one of the most restrictive years made. Low fuel level creates a higher vacuum load and causes cavitation much easier.

If you are running a draw tube, double check the connections including the hose to draw tube fittings as this is the most common point of sucking air. It is possible as the level of the fuel decreases, the pump must work harder to fill the inlet. And if you're sucking air, it will aerate and that'll sound like cavitation as it enters the pump.

I just had a buddy with a pump that started making noise. He was convinced it was a bad pump. Turned out to be a bad connection at the dorman (tank) fitting. It's a place to start. Then check every fitting and connection on the suction side.

I respect others opinions with additives and oils. I choose not to run them for my own reasons. But keep in mind you say you have had ULSD for about 18 months. Most likely its been far longer than that as most of us have had it for at least a year prior to it's official release.

Stick with the easy stuff first.

Dave,

There is nothing wrong with the FASS 150.150 on my truck - works great coming on 5 years. The sound I hear over the sound of the normal rattle is under the hood, on top of the head around #4, 5 and 6 (near the fuel filter canister).

I have plans to drop the tank and deal with the internals there (no draw tube needed for the model of FASS I have). I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the stock set up or as someone said a crack is in it somewhere.

I filled up yesterday and the funny idle minimizes but doesn't go away entirely. It could be fuel supply related but I've always run the tank right down and have never had any problems up until I swapped out the sticks which was last year. Obviously those 150HP sticks want more fuel so this is the reason why I installed the EDGE COMP and then the Smarty Box. But I also have EGT issues and such but a set of twins will solve that. That is just $$$ that I don't have is all.

On another matter the truck also has electrical issues that are just most bizzare. I still have yet to pull everything apart to fix that but I will be doing that in the coming weeks as the weather improves and I find some time to be without the truck for more than a few days.

FYI: Canada made the switch from LSD to ULSD unofficially in Feb 2006 and officially in Sept 2006. I'm somewhere between 18 months and longer on ULSD as a result.

hmm have you done a valve adjsutment on the truck it woudlent hurt and go through and re tourqe your rocker bolts 26 ft lbs and see if this continues. if this started after you installed injectors it would lead me to belive that they have something to do with it but that wouldent make sense on why it gets louder at lower fuel. and just for fun what is ur fuel pressure gauge reading and where is it located?

No haven't made that adjustment - it's on the list of things to do. Like everything it takes time.

I thought it was injector related too but I removed them all, rechecked, installed new gaskets on the filler tubes and that sort of thing.

The pressure reading never changes really - it sits higher than 15 at idle, normally around 18. The port is off the main banjo on the VP44 after 3 fuel filters. Never any issue there as far as I can tell.

I thought maybe it was timing related because te VP44 works well with stock sticks. So, I added the EDGE COMP and it is used mainly to control smoke from the big sticks - I run that most of the time at 1x1. Then I added the smarty to rejig the ECM and it is either on stock or on 4. I don't run both with timing but I could just to see what that does for this particular sound. It is probably a valve adjustment to be honest.

how long have you owned the truck and how long since the last valve adjustment, your pressures are good and its in the right spot so that eleminates low fuel pressure, were your injectors pop tested and whose injectors are they? usualy with say ddp's or mach series of injectors your idle smooths out it dosent get rougher but i have no idea what brand you have. and buy filler tubes do u mean the crossover tubes in the head?

A valve adjustment is easy enough. I'd do that and see what the results are.

A little tip from your Uncle Andy... "when performing a valve adjustment, don't forget to put the softball sized blowby breather thing back on the timing cover when you're done with your adjustments and then drive 40 miles". It makes a HORRIBLE mess. Ask me how I know...

I've owned it since new and never had the valves adjusted. The sticks are Edge Jammers Stage 5. Cross Over's = yes.

Those Jammer 5s idle rough. I have Mach 6s in my truck and just pulled them to send them back to Don for some work and I stuck a set of jammer 5s in and it now idles rough. A valve adjustment is easy to do butreally doubt it will change the rough idle and you even said it started when you changed to the Jammers

Well, then maybe I'll yard them out and go to something else. What would you recommend for good TQ / HP but not for drags or sled pulling. This truck is a daily driver with some attitude.

Can't go wrong with a set of Machs or DDPs. Mach 4s would be a good choice very smooth at idle and will make more power even though they are a 150 hp injector and cleaner too. DDps are very good too and cost less then the Machs. Give Rip a call at Source Automotive 1-866-211-1533

+1 on those recommendations. I also like Rip Rook, he's a good guy. However, I'd give the site sponsors/supporters a shot too. The price request forum here works VERY well. Lots of nice vendors that can get either brand of sticks.
