I have been smelling something that smells like hydraulic fluid.I looked under the truck this morning and there was a grayish looking fluid on the cement floor, not much.It smells like hydraulic fluid..I can also smell it when the truck is running if i am standing by the motor.
I lifted the hood and so no leaks.It leaked under the truck about where the transmission and transfer case are located.Could it be an oil leak?I am not a mechanic at all.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.. Peace and Prayers

 

The Haynes manual for our trucks recommends running the same gear oil from the differential in the transfer case, so that's where I would start checking for leaks. I don't know the smell of hydraulic fluid, but I know gear oil has a really strong odor. You don't have a signature yet, so I don't know if you're running an auto or manual transmission. If you have a manual transmission, I'd check PTO cover bolts and the drain plug. If you have an auto, the fluid would be red/brown... and you mentioned the fluid is grayish, so I wouldn't suspect transmission. Hope this helps pinpoint the problem!

I think you are right on the smell of gear oil. I had a mechanic just 10 days ago check all fluids.Front and rear housings along with the trans&transfer.He said he added some to the tranny and transfer but the front and rear housings were full. Thanks

 

There are two PTO covers, one on each side of the transmission. They are located near the front of the transmission and have 6 bolts holding them on. Check the bottom-most bolts for leaking. (I don't have the proper hex for removing the drain plug on mine, so I drain it by removing the driver's side cover... I don't know if there are gaskets for the cover, but I use gasket-maker to seal!) If not the PTO cover, I would tend to suspect that transfer case. If you see no leaks at the drain lug, maybe there's a seal that's leaking? If nothing else: crank it up, drive it around, pull it back into the garage and watch for leaks.
