HELP! 99 Cummins
Driving home yesterday I smelled a burning rubber stink coming through the vents. I pulled over, popped the hood and saw smoke coming from here (pictured). I'm very new to diesels and am just learning how this engine works and what everything is. Could someone help me identify this part and suggest what might be going wrong with it?
Thank you kindly.

Im thinking an idler, but if the alternator some how bound up for a while....
Maybe you should get/ or borrow a mechanic's stethescope and CAREFULLY listen to the alternator and idler(s) for grinding or unusual noise(s), OR pull the belt and check them by hand and by feel. THat should help narrow it down.

i would say alternator or maybe your ac compressor, either could have locked up and made the belt start smoking, take the belt off and spin both by hand, check if either spin hard or feel if a bearing is going bad
