As long as dont touch the ground to any metal you can even take the POS off its your choice and no it wont drain your batt in 30 minutes you wont even lose any amperages it causes apsolutly no harm to the truck as long as you make sure the key is off when you put the cables back on. To do a compression test on a 24 valve you need to have the correct adapter. Because you pull the injectors on these trucks to do it. Unlike powerstrokes or duramaxes where you can just pull the glow plugs.

You can even warm your truck up before you do the relearn so you dont have to be cold. Or go put on some bibs and a extra pair of socks and go do it... . but let us know sorry for the late reply I work 6 days a week and go to bed by 10pm. Im even willing to give you my phone number if you want it but no there are no videos of how to relearn the apps is pretty straight forward.

I don't think idle rpm will cause hard starting but low cranking rpm will since the vp44 needs to be cranked fast enough to create enough pressure to pop the injectors. Here is a link with a lot of info for you. VP44 Diagnostic Scroll down almost to the bottom where it says hard start cold in red.

New injectors was on my shopping list anyway after i get my tranny rebuilt along with an air dog. but harbor fright i think has a diesel compression tester or maybe advance auto. ill have to look up how to do one ive only seen it done to gassers which i know is way different. also what should the compression be if i get the chance to test it
I hear ya, I've owned my 98.5 since I was 18, just turned 20 last month, I've learned A LOT since joining the forum!

Thanks for the welcome AlaskanRenegade. haha dont worry its ok RanchhandTRC. me and my cousin for the problem the grid heater wasn't getting any power at all but the solenoids would click if you gave them power so we made sure the ground was good (we think haha) right now its unplugged well see what happens in the morn if that doesnt work we are both lost so hopes are up there. he showed me how to take the silencer out of the stock turbo so something got done at least.

My 98.5 gets moody at like 10 and lower.(and it's been COLD lately)
I HAVE to plug it in. But then again my grid heater relay was going out, new one now so hopefully she's a bit nicer!

Awesome glad shes a going. Something to remeber KISS- Keep it simple stupid.. I dont know how many guys go off and check for the worst case senario before checking the simple stuff. Sorry we didnt tell you to check fuses and relays first, but I assumed you had power to the grids at first but then realized you did not. Ever got any more questions or issue feel free to pm or start a thread.
