Default First post and Oil Pressure question

Hello all. Just bought my first cummins truck today. It's a 1999 2500 5 speed with some mods (see signature). I'm new to the cummins world coming from the Mustang scene. When I bought this truck today, one of the first things the guy was telling me was it needed a new oil pressure sending unit. When you crank the truck, it will sit around 20psi at idle for a few seconds then falls off to zero, the warning light came on, and it never moves again. I was hesitant, but we drove the truck around plenty before I actually bought it and it never skipped a beat which led me to believe it was only the sensor. I don't want to fork out the $200 for a new one right this minute, so i was contemplating swapping to a mechanical gauge for the time being. I've read that the factory gauge is garbage, so should I stick with the mechanical gauge permanently? If so, can you all recommend me a good brand gauge?

I just run the stock oil press. Check and see if you have a cummins dealer near you. A sending unit through them is $82 or order one from genos garage '98.5-'02 Dodge Turbo Diesel Oil Pressure Sensor-Geno's Garage
