The popping sound seems like wheel bearings, as for upgrades I dont know, your proably need to replace ball joints, tierods, gear box. and wheel bearings. But jack your truck up and push up and down on your tires and see if they move if they do then its your wheel bearings, does your steering feel lose? if it does ball joints will help.

Could also be your steering shaft, they're notorious for wearing out prematurely. You can open the hood and grab it and give it a shake, see if it's loose. To be making a popping noise one of the joints would have to be pretty bad. Sounds like something in the linkage to me though. I've been through bearings three times and mine never popped, but that doesn't mean they can't I guess.
