Default ID this part please!

Got a question about what the heck is this part? Under the dash close to the fuse box there is about 2 inch by 3/4 inch round grey cylinder. 3 prongs. may be a fuse or breaker type thing? We found it because truck wouldn't crank and we started checking fuses (turns out needed new starter) And this part was getting very, very hot, so pulled it to get new. Our local parts guy had no clue what it even is. So got new starter, and truck cranks so that part is not critical, but does anybody have any ideas? I could get a pic tomorrow if needed. Thanks for all your help!

Got a 1992 Dodge W250 in February, new project truck!

What he said.... Heat makes them work, it's a bimetal device that when heated by electricity flow, contacts the light circuit and when no more current comes from the switch it begins to cool until it breaks the circuit for the light giving u a "delayed off".
