Alright a buddy a I were talking about swappin a different trans into our trucks. He says that a 47RH (94-95) can go in a 4X4 1st gen. Every other person that ive talked to says you cant, and then the others say you can. I figured I better just ask the guys on here who know what they are talking about rather than listening to the duramax owner down the road. If it is at all possible what might be some of the parts for this ( little things). Hopefully somebody can help clear up all this confusion. Thanks

Need a lockup adapter plate and matching starter, obviously the trans and converter and depending on the chassis/cab/wheelbase configuration you might have to have the driveshafts shortened/lengthened.That will get it all bolted into the truck and then you have to figure out a way to wire and activate the l/u clutch. Search around the net, it`s been done lots of times before.

Hey man thanks for the links. This helped so much for the problem at hand. Also would a 47rh out of a 96 work? I want to say its the 47re but not 100 percent on that. I may have a chance to get it for little to nothin compared to buying a new 47rh. If so, do you just put a 94-95 valve body in it?

All 96`s would be RE units, won`t work, aside from all the electrics for the shift solenoids etc. there are some hard part differences inside the unit (output shaft and governor assy.)

The old man talked me into just rebuilding the a 518. Just ordered an ats 5 star billet torque converter, and just need to find a rebuild kit for it and should be good. But thanks for the feedback guys. Its been pretty helpful

That ATS converter probably won`t work in your non lockup trans. Lockup and non-lockup units use different converters. I`d give them a call ASAP and verify.

you need to make sure that converter is NOT a lock-up converter as it will not work in the A518 (AKA: 46RH).

The A518 uses a NON lock-up converter. ;0

It says 90-93 Non-Lock up Billet torque converter on their site. and also called and talked to a guy at ATS Diesel and made sure before I even thought about buying it, and they verified that it is for a first gen dodge with the A-518.
