So I replaced the block on the truck with one that came out of some industrial application. I used the same dipstick tube and stick, but when i fill it with 3 gallons, its about 1/4" below add. Are there any differences between block castings that could affect this? I used the original oil pan. I guess I just want to make sure 12 quarts is enough oil.

Dipstick fit exactly like it did on the original? Could be a matter of the casting where the dipstick goes in being higher up the block. You'd think the bend in the tube would be different tho.

It fits the same, I think there is a variance somewhere because the metal turbo drain wouldn't line up either. I was just curious if anyone had a for sure, yes some are different answer.

How are you supposed to go around calibrating a dipstick on a Cummins? I think there's a procedure for that... But how do you know?

I really hate dipsticks. People pretend like they aren't easy to misread and a major cause of engine failure.

After the ***** occupied France in World War II, they forced Renault to manufacture vehicles for their war effort... Renault intentionally set the dipsticks low, so the ***** would only get a few thousand miles on the engines before they seized. Germans never figured it out because they were inclined to believe that the French made major POS engines anyways.

with engine empty install the amount of oil it took before you changed engine blocks then crank engine to completely fill oil filter, shut it off and let it set for about 20 minutes for oil to drain back down to pan then wipe clean dip stick and recheck oil level and where it shows then is the full level regardless what the prior marks show. then take a scribe of sharp pocket knife and scribe a line to indicate full level. you can measure prior markings and then rescribe low oil level also useing that measurement.

I bought a complete cummins out of a drill rig the a couple months ago it's from the late 80's with a stanedyne injection pump on it. Is that block stonger than the block in my truck? if it is is it worth swapping blocks?
