What's the failure mode? Leaking, overheating, grenading, what?

You probably need a new steering box - valve stuck or clogged. You could try flushing it. I run a cooler and filter in the power steering circuit on my 1st Gen - not because it overheats, but because the power steering systems on these trucks are minimal at best. Very little fluid in a system that has to contend with a D60 under a heavy front end.

Filter is a Magnefine - install in return line. Great little gadgets:

You get them lots of places. I think the last batch I bought came from Rock Auto. Just search for power steering filter.

The cooler is a Ford unit for an F-something I found on eBay for $10. You can see it in behind the bumper there:

Plumb these in with a few bucks worth of tubing and clamps and you'll never have a power steering problem again - assuming the box is good.

Yes you can convert it and get rid of the vacuum brakes. I've seen a few people do the swap, seems pretty easy. search for it in archives, it's in there somewhere
