Default alternator question

lately my truck's volt meter has been a little high and then one day it was off the charts, i could smell it cooking the battery. i got it home safely now. Now what would cuase this, the battery just being crap or maybe the alternator going on me or what else could it be?

Sounds like the voltage regulator is shorted.
If this is on the '90 you have listed on your profile, the Voltage Regulator is located on the firewall, directly above the cylinder head.

If there is a partially shorted or dead cell in the battery it can fool the regulator and cause an overcharge state, but if you are starting the truck in the cold weather, I doubt the battery is to fault.
