I have a 1991 4x4 5 speed with a np205 transfer case. I am not sure what oil is in the transfer case or what should be in it.

Can anyone tell me?? I am getting different stories from Dodge and the parts stores as well as a rebuilder.

 

Straight from my 1993 manual. Page 0-9, it needs 4.5 pints=2.13 liters. Page 21-342- recommended lubricants for the Np205 transfer case include multi-purpose gear lubricants and single weight engine oils. Engine oil should be API classification SF/CC or SF/CD. Use SAE 30 at ambient temps below 0 C (32F) and SAE 50 at ambient temps above this point. SAE multi-purpose gear lubricants with an API grade rading of GL 5 are recommended for severe duty operation. SAE grades 80, 75W-90, 90, 80W-90, 140, and 80W-140 are all acceptable. Use SAE 80 or 75W-90 when ambient temps are below -23C (-10F). Use SAE 90 or 80W-90 when ambient temps is above the stated range. SAE 140 or 80W-140 can be used when severe duty is anticipated, or when ambient temps are expected to exceed 32C (90F). I put 75W-90 royal purple in my w250 axles.

 

You can run almost anything in it, but only takes less than 2 1/2 qt. and I don't use the 4wd hardly at all, so I put in some expensive Amsoil synthetic gear lube and figure it should be good for quite awhile.
