I'm making an offer tomarrrow of $4500. He says the orig tailgate will be comming from oregon when he goes up for vacation in July . $4700. or $200.00 more when the tailgate gets here . Does that sound fair?

NADA shows $4,015 for one with A/C mint.. they also knock off about $400 (%10) for being a diesel so 4500-4700 sounds fair if all it needs is paint. It won't be a power house like a common rail or p-pumped puller, but $120 in mods will wake it up enough to have some fun and or work.

you should ask if it has any upgrades, turbo, fuel pin, governor spring, etc.

IMO don't ask about mods...
Right away he'll think you want it bad...

$4700 sounds good for a clean one. Prices have gone up in the past few years.
When you start making power you also start making lots of heat....

Find an intercooler from a ford powerjoke - 1999 to 2001 - the all aluminum models. Make sure they guarantee it for 30 or 45 days. Bring it home and get some 3" PVC and 3" boots and pressure test it to about 40 psi. Kind of sneak up to it. Let it sit for 20 - 30 min at 20 psi, then go to 25, then 30, etc. IF you've got a way to submerge it in water you're home free, otherwise make sure there are no leaks.
Good turbo - HX40 Super or S362 - before the turbo has a 4" exhaust outlet and a 14cm or 16cm turbine housing - some are being sold that only have 3" exhaust....

Make him pay for the minor things - intercooler 125 - 150, injectors ~ $550 - $700, help him with the turbo 750 - 1000...
AND he will appreciate it more if he does his own work

250hp to 320hp is about the limit for a first gen after that the poket book gets drained a little faster for the hp numbers and kind of money you want to spend just to get the truck i think you need to get a p pump 12v you can definatly get one for 4-6k eaisly and the power potintial is far better and parts are easyer to find and they still have the free ip mods that a ve pump has except you get more power and they still have the great fuel milage that first gens get as well. a 1998 12v short bed x cab 4x4 w a 6 speed with 2002 rear disk brake conversion would be my ideal truck because they are rated at 220hp instead of 180 like the earlier models i would have got one of these instead of my 1st gen but i only had 2k so i got the 1993 and i love it another thing if you do get a 1st gen stay away from the auto all dodge autos suck my brother has had to buy 4 of the pos 3 for his 99 1500 with only 90,000 one under warranty 2 out of poket and one for his 2003 3500 drw hes getting the ats for that one tho just fyi
