With you m3 pin I would turn the smoke screw up till its flush with the inside top. I would then back the starwheel up a few turns. That will allow very little fuel untill the boost comes up.

Like posted, back the afc preload screw off, then bring the star wheel up to apply more force to the AFC. This will make the pump respond slower until boost comes in to clean it up. Soften the pump response and let it spool mostly on the injectors.

Did the pump shop grind the AFC lever? What color AFC spring you got? You should be able to tune out some smoke. My pump is from the same place and it is still in the box so I'm curious.

I would demand they tell you. Its your pump, kinda hard to diagnose an issue if you dont know whats done.

Thats how those diesel shops are. They don't want you to know a damn thing about the pump, that way if anything happens they just replace the whole damn thing and rape you with the cost of it

I went to get my gasket kit from a local shop and he wouldn't stop about how he thought I should replace the pump, he he never messes with pumps, and went on about runnaways and was trying to deture me from doing any work on it.
