Is the detent function of the gear shifter missing (Latching between gear positions)?

If so, that spring and ball are part of the rooster-comb. That's the thing that holds the gear-shift lever in place. If yours is like most, the comb has become loose on its mounting and has allowed the ball and spring to pop out.

The comb can be re-secured by simply re-peening where the factory did . . .

While you have the pan off it would be a good time to adjust the bands and tweak the valve body.

he beat me to it... had this problem with the 89. its hard to find a replacement part that is of better quality. i guess its pretty common. my trans guy however did find an "updated" part i believe from a newer style transmission.

I know how to adjust the bands, care to explain how to tweak the valve body? Thanks for the info.
