Default tranny problems

i just dropped the pan on my 93 12-valve its an automatic and when i looked in the pan a small spring and brass ball were rolling around in there anyone had the problem before?

you cant see or tell where it came from and any difference in the way it shifts or acts i hate when that happens

you had a sprag come apart it is going to leave you stranded if you dont get it fixed

Is the detent function of the gear shifter missing (Latching between gear positions)?

If so, that spring and ball are part of the rooster-comb. That's the thing that holds the gear-shift lever in place. If yours is like most, the comb has become loose on its mounting and has allowed the ball and spring to pop out.

The comb can be re-secured by simply re-peening where the factory did . . .

Your the man thats what happens i didnt even think of that my shifter is real sloppy and it happened about two weeks ago thanks for the help i sure do appreciate it

While you have the pan off it would be a good time to adjust the bands and tweak the valve body.

he beat me to it... had this problem with the 89. its hard to find a replacement part that is of better quality. i guess its pretty common. my trans guy however did find an "updated" part i believe from a newer style transmission.

I know how to adjust the bands, care to explain how to tweak the valve body? Thanks for the info.
