I have a 92 with stock turbo and 5 spd. so it would be a 21 or 22 cm housing? Reading on another page someone said to get a cheap hx35 with 12cm ex. housing. What is the stock turbo! Id what this person talking about just an axh housing and for a daily driver that sees freeway is waste gated a must?

i wouldn't go without a wastegate but ive seen it done before. the hx35 should spool faster than yours because of the 12cm exhaust housing, ive heard its a pretty good upgrade for the older 12 valves.

 

Thanks for info. Next question is where would be best place to buy a wastegated hx35 with a 14cm exh hausing? Or when looking for "good" used one what to look for? How much am I looking at spending. As always a budget is in mind.

 

ebay is a good start but be careful on there as you cant really see what you are looking at, salvage yards, local classifieds, thats where i just picked up a new hx40 for cheap! other than that just keep an eye out around forums you can find them from time to time. i would check the shaft end play and side to side play, some side to side play is ok but ive heard that if it moves back and forth its time to rebuild. also check that it spins freely and doesnt hang up anywhere.

 

It's important to know your budget, how much power you are looking to make, and if the truck is going to be towing or not.

 

If you look for turbos on ebay, be careful and make sure they are a genuine Holset. There are a lot of knock-off "hx40s" that are made in china. Holset tests their turbos to strict standards and the chinese fakes are not. There are videos of the fakes getting taken to their max and exploding like a grenade on youtube.

just a dumb question, i have a friend that knows someone that can get me a s300 for 50 bucks, needs bearings think it would be ok for a single??

 

It should be fine as a single as long as it's not too big. Then it would be laggy on a first gen, unless you have alot of fuel upgrades to spool it. They come in alot of different variations. I'm looking to go with a 62/65/12.

 

don't worry i just bought another truck (6.9l ford) so i can park the ol girl an upgrade the supply system, send the pump out ect. but she allready really pumps out the coal and shes just gonna get more fuel put to her
