are the gertag trannys a piece of crap? will they not hold up to many mods? my 92 has 174,000 on it and i don't want to grenade it as my wage does not support the repairs at this moment.

the trannys were one of the best out there.the only problem with them was fifth gear nut falling off so u would lose fifth but that was it.ive had 2 of that model trannys and they held up great with a bunch of mods.so my opinion would be yes they are good trannys.

There are guys out there pushing over 500hp and close to or over 1k tq through a getrag with no issues. The big thing is overfill it by one qt of fluid next time you change it. If I'm not mistaken the ones with the 5th gear nut problem is the nv4500 not the getrag.

You are thinking of teh NV4500's. The Getrags dont have the 5th gear nut problem.

The getregs are AWESOME trannys. They get a bad rap for a couple reasons.

1. They run low on fluid. After 20 or so years.... you need to change teh fluid... also over filling by a quart helps ALOT!!!

2. Dont lug it. This is also what kills the 5th gear nut in teh 4500's

You can either ad an extension tube. Or CAREFULLY jack up teh side that the fill plug is on and add the extra quart.

You might also be able to fill it through the hole for teh shifter but I'm not sure.

That's an NV4500 problem. Never head about anything like that from a G360. Another common issue is running the wrong oil. Overfilling helps with getting a lighter (motor/ATF/Synchromesh) oil into the bearings. Gear oil at the stock level almost guarantees faiure in short order.
