My 92 d350 has been a little hard to get into gear every once in a while. After running it for a while you can smell gear oil. Its not leaking or giving me any other problems but it has gotten stuck in 5th twice before. It hasnt done that lately but is this anything to worry about?

if u smell gear oil u probably need to look elsewhere as the getrag doesnt take gear oil. dont put gear oil in it either or it will have problems for sure. i belive the factory calls for 30 weight non-detergent. i personally use 15w40 as it is handy and seems to work better and make the transmission last longer. ur transfere case on the other hand does take gear oil. 90 weight or 80w90 or 85w140 r probably all acceptable.

I had heard they dont use gear oil but i guess it would have to be coming from the rear end because i dont have a transfer case. Or the previous owner filled the tranny up with gear oil which is why its acting up...?
