What Do You Love About Your 1st Gen?

Kinda Dead in here... Lets hear it! What Do You like the most about it?

I like the rugged good looks. :D

The dang thing just LOOKS mean! And The ride and lack of *bling* makes you feel like you are driving a real truck!
Also there are not alot of real clean ones around anymore!

Jazz 08-29-2008 06:55 AM

Kind of wish I had a nice 1st gen so I could let you know what I like about it most. This should be interesting to hear what everyone has to say:U:

2001shrtbedcummins 08-29-2008 07:20 AM

I liked the sound of mine. The VE and P-Pumps don't sound exactly the same straight piped. The VE just sounds, more rugged, and slow. But the slow part can be addressed. :choochoo: I miss mine

Old Pigiron 08-30-2008 08:48 AM

I love arriving at work with coffee down my tee shirt from the rough ride, I love how it lites up with the first turn of the key, no matter what the temperature is outside, :U: I love how I can fix it myself, no electronics, I love the mileage, I get 28 mpg on the hi-way (cdn gallon 4.55 liters) I like the "BEEFY" aerodynamics of the front end, as aerodynamic as a brick wall, I love the NP205 bullet proof cast iron "hernia" giving transfer case, however, when I sit in my wifes GMC Sierra, I sure enjoy the smooth ride and how quiet it is. But as I am getting older, my 91 is getting quieter,:humm: I now have 319,000 kilometers on her now, and it is starting to show it's age, but all it needs is a new paint job and some work done to the bench seat. It'll probably outlast me.

The_Head 09-01-2008 11:43 PM

I like how they look like a leftover relic from the 70's and the how they are hard to find in great shape, the rarity factor. There's a bazillion 3rd gens and half a million 2nd gens running around in my town.

GO OVRIT 09-06-2008 10:16 PM

Do they make other trucks?:humm:

1stgenman 09-07-2008 04:58 PM

Dude i love the mileage and the fact that i can smoke any ricer around town here with mine. And to me they just have an better style.

C/PRD/ 09-08-2008 11:08 AM

The 6BTA, I've learned to love dodge for it for 10years now.

welderboy250 09-15-2008 08:06 PM

but are they as awesome...

bigreddog 09-17-2008 09:36 PM

I love how she NEVER lets me down:c:

W150CTDproject 09-18-2008 12:04 AM

i love the milage, the looks, power, how it feels, the looks you get cuz not many around, sound, And they're dang near bullet proof. I ahve 2 of em so i kno lol:c:

greasemonkey 09-23-2008 12:43 AM

I like mine 'cause it was cheap and it's paid for; not near as nice as the 2nd gen I had, though.
it's a tough, rugged beast of a work truck. mine is called the Mexican Mtn Goat. the front leaf springs are, growing, on me. I can certainly relate to the coffee on the shirt reference, too! :rocking:

Begle1 09-23-2008 01:44 AM

I love the overdrive and 3.07 rear end, and the lack of a speedometer, that makes me have to guesstimate speed based on RPM, and how I finally get a GPS speedometer and realize while I'm cruising down the road at 2600 RPM that 2500 RPM is 100 miles an hour.

I love how Dodge hadn't figured out the concept of "relays" yet when they built the first gens. Oh, wait, that one sucks.

I love the ability to squat on the frame rail on either side of the engine while making repairs.

I love talking to my wet, overheating and desperate-for-more truck like it's the sadomasochistical dirty woman I will never have.

I love taking out the air-side engine compartment splash shield so that the glowing-red manifold illuminates the night-time track on the way down.

I love how good four 6x9's and a sub sound in a regular cab.

I love the weak frame that flexs like a cobra when it's on the dyno. Oh no, wait, that one sucks.

VENT WINDOWS.

I love how my truck starts on the first crank.

I love how my engine has one wire required for it to work right, on a toggle switch, and my tranny has one wire for it to work right, on a toggle switch.

I love how shut-down cables and gutted fuel shut off solenoids make the cops completely unable to turn off your truck while you're handcuffed on the side of the road.

I love how worn tumblers make anybody else completely unable to start the truck unless they know the two-handed start trick.

I love the RWAL system. Oh, no, wait, I hate the RWAL system.

If every solid state electric component in my truck goes out when the Ruskies EMP us, I can start and drive anywhere without an alternator, gauges or water injection.

I love people inexplicably offering to buy my truck whenever it has been washed recently.

I love how the cops tail and harrass me whenever I'm in Norco, California, because they remember getting calls from concerned citizens about a red Dodge doing autodressage on city or private property over a year ago. No, actually that sucks.

That's right, the turbocharger is the only emissions device on the vehicle. Somehow Dodge got away with making a vehicle in 1990 that doesn't even have an evap system, PCV valve or catalytic converter.

I love the vent on the driver's side kick panel.

The dash really, really sucks compared to almost any other dash on the planet.

I love the rubber moulding on the quarter panels that is attached with 44 plastic pieces that cost $8 a piece.

I love the Ramcharger tank.

ez_lle71 09-23-2008 05:35 AM

the part i love about my 1st gen is the fact that there are very few driving around in my area. vent windows are handy, And the two color paint job from the factory. They just don't paint trucks like they used to. And overall just the old school factor of the 1st gen really makes it worth it.
ez

bigdaddydiesel 09-23-2008 10:19 AM

TMWeber 10-05-2008 11:15 PM

I love the incredible reliability:U: and the fuel economy

cumminscr 02-08-2009 09:42 PM

i love how they have the cute little dash thing inside and they look small enoujgh to park in a garage
i dont own one but would kill for the dude who has that red one on here!

Rocky Mountain Texan 02-08-2009 09:49 PM

you talking about me?

Richie O 02-08-2009 10:17 PM

Its paid for.:choochoo::ok1:

2001shrtbedcummins 02-08-2009 11:17 PM

the fact that even with the timing boogered up it would still start at 10 degrees with no grid heaters or block heater...:5::5: sounded cool as hell

cumminskid92 02-09-2009 01:17 PM

the fact that i have to go to the chiropractor every time i drive mine

Greg G 02-12-2009 02:07 PM

I love the fact that at 350,00 miles nothing other than adjusting valves, timing the pump, replacing the water pump and changing the oil & filters.
She still starts, pulls and runs GREAT.
When you lock your keys in the truck or the door locks will not open (even with the key) – You can still climb thru the sliding glass window.
I love the fact that when loading fire wood to help do my part to speed up global warming – I really do not care about maring the paint or denting the bed.
The very fact that my trucks exhaust smells sooooooo much better that my brothers 2nd gen.
I love the fact that when the truck sets for weeks on end because diesel fuel is $5.00 per gallon – I can jump in and fire it right up and head to get a load of mulch.
The absolute number one reason that I love my dirty old beat up 93 CTD Dually – “Chicks dig it and always want a ride”~!

unless the headache rack from your flatbed covers the sliding window:argh: it's okay, though, my passenger door lock/latch assembly is broken so instead of replacing it, I just disabled the locking feature...so now I CAN'T lock my keys in :humm:

Greg G 02-12-2009 08:23 PM

Sorry mine is still a fully functioning truck with an 8 ft bed (that never has to be made). Not a Flat bed – Way to hard to haul wood, mulch and the larger girls (they would roll right off). Like the post wanted to know and what I stated – “Why I love my truck”. One other thing that I did leave out is this – I love the fact that DODGE used a ½ ton ball joint in a REAL truck. One item that will wear out and cause me great grief when the wheel falls off 250 miles from home and the DODGE dealer at that time gets $95.00 per joint plus labor… Door locks – Just like the light switch. I can tear it down and fix the problem in a matter of minutes. Adapt – Over come and Improvise – the Marines and Dodge owners everywhere~!

jasonfriedlin 02-12-2009 09:02 PM

I like how easy it is to get more power out of mine. If you get beat, you just ask the guy who beat you if you can borrow a screwdriver, go do some tweakin, and run'em again. I just wish I had a few dollars to fix some of the small stuff wrong with mine so it was like when I got it.

puddlepirate 02-22-2009 11:03 PM

I love the king pin dana 60 that sits under the front, instead of that balljoint crap.

YES!! serviceable wheel bearings and locking hubs. those hubs make the perfect height step for me to use while leaning across the chasm to reach something on the engine.

Diesel Nut 04-05-2009 03:29 PM

1st gens were built when trucks were trucks!

I love the rugged looks, the clean, sharp body lines. They just look like they could hit a cement truck head on and come out the winner.

God I love that VE sound. Nothing sounds like a VE truck.

The response. The VE trucks drive so much smoother and easier than P pumped trucks.

Yeah, it rides a little rough, but read my first response.

So much easier to work on, to diagnose, to upgrade. . . . . .

Only downside is a non lock up transmission, but I have a plan for that . . . .

Ability to pull 7 Tons of Motel Space up a hill

I was leary at first but after I converted a 1996 RAM 2500 4X4 Extended Cab, Long Bed by installing the entire 5.9L Gen I Cummins and the power train out of a 1992 RAM W250, and making upgrades of the smaller Turbine Housing, 5 inch Turbo Back Exhaust, High Performance Injectors, and making minor fuel adjustments I was so amazed at the amount of power to pull this 7 Ton (motel on wheels) for my wife up mountain passes.

I do believe that once I install the Denny T Fuel Pin and a larger Inter-Cooler however, that I will be able to get up the hills without having to be floor boarded in O/D to doing that!!

I love this engine!! :U:

LOGANSTANFORTH 04-08-2009 10:37 AM

cause my 93 screams old school cowboy cadillac.........tu-tone creme and maroon paint, western hauler bed, alcoas........:rocking:

my 90 model cause now i can beat up on the newer trucks with less money involved, cause we all know it makes them mad when they get beat by a old farm truck.........:rocking:

oh and they are both paid for......

89silverbullet 04-12-2009 11:52 PM

i love the way she shakes when i turn off the key.

i love the quarter gallon of diesel she shoots out at start up.

peobryant 04-21-2009 08:26 PM

I love that even after driving a Common Rail with a full billet tranny, I still like to drive my 17yr old, non lock up truck more.

LOGANSTANFORTH 04-22-2009 11:37 AM

so far i got 3 first gens and they cost me the same as a new regular cab, short bed, V6 automatic truck.........oh and soon to possibly have a fourth 1st gen.......77 1 ton 4x4 4-speed truck.......

We've got 4 Cummins trucks. My '91 D350, my brothers '97 2500, my dad's '97 2500 and my other brothers '03 Common Rail.

I still like to drive mine the most. :U: (My brothers '97 is real fun to drive too though.

remps 05-05-2009 05:19 PM

I love how I can leave that pimped out Cobalt 8 lengths behind by the time I hit the 60 km speed limit in town, without even making any smoke. Then when they speed by,tap the throttle to give em a puff to show them you had WAAAAY more fuel left. Then laugh when they get pulled over.I love the fuel mileage and the power.I love opening the back window before I shut her down and just bliping the throttle.I love my 5 inch straight pipe stack.

64camo 05-28-2009 12:24 PM

Its more fun than my 07 and I don't have to worry about scratches

cumminsfreak86 07-22-2009 10:15 AM

I LOVE the way I get looks of jealousy and awe from all those 2nd and 3rd gen owners as I drive down the road. and I love my original ram hood ornament

Swaggs 07-29-2009 11:59 AM

I love pulling into the local starbucks to meet the girlfriend, and having soccer moms look at me, like, "you have to be kidding" sorry, but my long wheelbase truck just doesnt turn like your dodge journey, you HAVE to get out of my way!
