Default P-pump conversion slash engine swap.

I looked n looked for weeks online for a good writeup on doing a p-pump conversion where your changing the whole engine n could not find one so I thought I'd make this.

So basically my 93 5 speed 4x4 had 192k km on it when i bought it. shortly after i noticed it was starting to leak coolant as it got more into spring months. Well I did everything I could to keep the engine alive as she had a crack in the block but to my disapointment nothing worked I even tried drilling n tapping the block put a plate on slavered with JB weld in behind n it worked not bad if I kept the rad cap loose now sure by this time the crack was about 10" long It mighta worked if I did it when I first found the crack.

So basically the old engine came out nice n easy, rad came out exhaust dp came off turbo came off in truck, fuel lines intercooler tubes, wires n throttle cables came off, I unbolted the powersteering/vacuum pump n left it in the truck so I wouldn't have to re-bleed the powersteering system. Next the hood came off, jack under the tranny unbolted the clutch slave cylinder n set it aside, unbolted motor mounts n bell housing n lifted her out I found my pass side motor mount was loose on the crossmember to.

So we started with this.

Everything pulled off including my pressure regulator I had on my 2nd gen lift pump.

From there we used my nabours loader to lift the engine out. We could not get her in with the loader n lined up on the pilot bearing so I had to drop the tranny, t-case, driveshafts n shifters. Luckily I recently rebuilt the tranny so it all came apart without a hitch n I knew every bolt size still. So we ended up with this.

By the end of the day now I started this on a monday, My moms Birthday while dealing with her 40th birthday we had a surprise party so I took her out for breakfast in my truck then when I got home helped dad n my sister set stuff up outside while I worked on my truck. This pictures were taken the same day as the one above with no drivetrain, had to wait for my nabour to let me use his loader by this time it was Thursday n I'll explain why it took so long later on.

This was the engine I put in my truck it's from a 95 auto truck n for some reason has a 180 horse pump on it. anyway it had 303k km on with nice honey colored oil n runs like a top.

Now what all I had to change/modify.

Basically I used the 1st gen backing plate n clutch since for now I'm keeping the getrag, I had to run an adapter for the fuel line which I already had on the old ve motor since I ran a 2nd gen lp I had to keep the 1st gen starter aswell. Now all the wiring plugged right in with the exception of the fss which took one wire switched off the ignition, old fss wire for VE, then one wire off a relay that is only on when the starter is cranking over and one ground wire.

I also had to get a custom throttle cable as the idiot I got the motor from I told him I needed the throttle cable oh yeah yeah no problem he said go to pick up the engine n it was cut, Called parts stores n even dodge parts stores couldnt even find one in there system from a 94-9812v. Dode said they are on backorder. Well my grandfather, welder/machinist, heavyduty n mercedes mechanic stopped by right as we were trying to work out this problem n says gimme the old cable as the ends fit just the cable n casing were to short n says I'll make you one. Came back just as we were about to try n start her up with a cable n it works great now. But a 2nd gen throttle cable will work just fine.

I used all the 1st gen parts like alt n fan hub assembly with the 1st gen belt. uhm kept my turbo off my VE too n reused it, uhm used the 1st gen intake horn for the time being with stock ic tubes, bolted up the vacuum pump with no problems, everything was basically bolt in. I cut the return line just past the steel fitting slid the rubber hose over the hard plastic line n clamped her down n she does not leak at all. put the hood on closed her n been driving it ever since this was a month ago n I have not had one problem with it yet.

I hope I have everything covered if not lemme know n I can help you out.

Josh.

Sweet man! I like it! I saw a write up on doing a p-pump swap to a 1st Gen on time and it was cool but looked like more work than doing a motor swap to me! What's your name by the way, I don't think I've caught it.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I run the Fram Ultra Filters but K&N Oil Filters have the only bench flow mark rating for guaranteed oil flow.

The actually pump swap is supposed to be harder then whole engine swap.

Ah, ok. Mopar would seem like a good choice, seems like it would be made for hotter temps. I dunno.

Yeah, should be, its just the K&N have guaranteed flow ratings, I think they are the best by far.

I'm doing the same with my 1st gen. What did you do for the FSS wiring?
