Pump timing for $200
Talked to the owner/ mechanic of a diesel shop in my town and he says he has advanced pump timing before and he's going to charge me 2hrs shop time -90.00$ per hour plus tax. He wants to go 15* max I told him I want it 16.5-16. My truck is a 95' with auto the rest of the mods are in my sig. Do you guys think there is a noticable difference between 15* and 16*? I might just buy the tool from snap on so I can make future adjustments myself.
Should I do pump timing or 4k gsk first? Thanks

doing the timing is INVOLVED and $180 to have it done is really a pretty good price at a ligit shop. i would def go to 16ish there is a difference but absolutly not like 4Ks those are by far and away the best bag for the buck!!!!!
I just had my timing done on my 95 by a local shop here in Colorado for $180 bucks. They recommended to bump my timing up to 17-18 degrees for the altitude I am in.
My truck is mostly stock besides intake and exhaust but I can feel a huge difference in throttle response and top end. I'm loving it, plus I went 180 miles on 10 gallons of fuel. 18 MPG's..

I'm still torn between paying a pro to do it or buying the tool and doing it myself.if I buy the tool than I could always bump it higher in the future, plus if I can convince my coworker to pick up a p-pumped truck I could bump his timing as well. But thinking back on my truck budget I'm going to get the 4k gsk and valve springs first then do the timing. Hopefully the trans can handle it! After that it's billet converter and vb time. Thanks for the help guys

Plus living in Alaska it can get pretty cold and I've read that going past 16.5 can effect cold starting. Coldest I usually see is late December through mid Febuary. It can drop to 30 below zero Fahrenheit in south central AK.

$200 isnt bad at all. Does that include a new crank seal and new timing cover seal?
Also, while the cover is open, you MUST take care of the Killer Dowel Pin, if you havent already done so.

Well I have the gaskets and the new seal with seal saver. I have the template for making my own kdp tab. My front cover is leaking pretty bad and I'm wanting to do it it's just a matter of getting the time to do it. So its easier to advance the timing with the cover off? Looks like I'm doing the timing myself when I do the kdp. Its 220.00 for the the cummins tune up kit from snap-on.
What was the limit on timing for hard starting?

Yes it will be easier to do the timing with the cover off. You will have a better look at everything, more room to work and not worry about dropping things with the cover off and like said before you can take care of that KDP. I would set it at 16 and run with it, you don't want a ton of timing with the basic mods anyways.

. im learning as you guys go
