I had my '97 done at a trailer shop, I took them a new break controller and the plug-in cable for my truck that I purchaced on-line.
When the tech gave me my truck back he also gave me the plug-in cable back, he said most of the older Dodge trucks had to be wired in the old way.

If it came from factory with tow package it will have hookup for brake controller at left corner under dash behind that bundle of wires. When I got my 1996 new I had a hard time finding it and I knew about where to look.
