Default Exhaust Question

So while I was tightening my oil pan bolts yesterday, I noticed something that looks like a miniature muffler right after the down pipe. What in the hell is that? LOL It is all straight pipe after that though. Just curious.

Catalytic converter, either hollow it out or replace it with a chunk of pipe, they are way more restrictive than a muffler and will plug up if you don't drive many long distances or blowing smoke alot, get rid of it and let that thing breath!

Out here in Colorado it's a visual inspection for the cat and a smoke opacity test. Anything over 35% it considered failing.
