More cat 2 micron filter questions.
Don't try to use a bypass filter in the fuel line. It won't flow enough. Look at the GPM rating, if they even have one for that filter - probably not. I run two filters in the 1st Gen fuel system and three in the commonrail. Make sure to put the finer filters downstream in the chain. Otherwise, the coarser filter downstream doesn't do anything because it never sees anything big enough to stop.
The fuel filters, ah yes, can't find the old write-up, here's the pics:

Oil bypass is really easy and inexpensive on these trucks. All you need is a a few fittings, some hose, clamps, zip ties and the filter of your choice. Lots of places to mount them. Here's where I mounted a BMK30-type (not Amsoil) head on my '07:

It presently has a Wix 5um can on it, and will go to the Amsoil Eabp120 (2um) on the next change. Holds a gallon of oil. Just tap off the stock filter head and return somewhere. Don't forget to put a restricter in the line to slow the flow. You can return to various places or the pan like I did, something like this:

Too easy.

Rather then explain what my plan is, ill just post pictures when im done. Its pretty much like what everyone else has done in the past.
IMHO you don't want to run an oil filter in an application requiring a fuel fuel filter. Oil filter are designed for a closed system to they are multipass rated usually, fuel filters are single pass rated.
It will take a LONG while for a 749 to fill up with crap so running it before the factory fuel filter is not a big deal, I ran the smaller 750 for 30k intervals as a primary filter with no plugging issues. One note, the factory fuel filter is a water separator too. The 749/750s are designed to be secondary filters with a water stripper in the system so I would either add on or keep the stock filter.

so i was planning on just cutting the hard line between the filter head and Injection pump and then running soft line through the filter head which is mounted to the fender and then back to the IP. anyone see anything wrong with this concept? seems nobody really does anything outside of a few kits out there.

also can the filter be mounted sideways?

Sideways doesn't affect filtration although when the filter is changed you'll have a mess. I do feel the filter was designed to be upright so the base acts as a sediment bowl. Nothing wrong with rubber hose as long as it is fuel rated.

so i decided to go ahead and order another one of the filter heads. im going to use the one i have now to filter the stuff before it goes into the tank, i picked up a 200gph utility pump at harbor freight and plan on using this to pump the trans fluid through the cat filter and ill add a cat filter as planned when the next filter head gets here. so for now ill be half way there.
---AutoMerged DoublePost---
so i pumped about 30 gallons of used trans fluid in through the cat filter, filled it from dead empty. runs great on 100% trans oil and starts right up, even has a little more power id say. but its absolutely disgusting. it idles clouds of white smoke and puffs nasty nasty smoke. when you get out it smells foul
. so i diluted it down with 7 gallons of diesel and now the idle is back to normal, no smoke at idle but it still smells. ill take it tho, slap *** full tank and only spend 30 bucks on diesel.
my second filter head is on the way. ill post pictures of everything next week, the filter head under the hood and the redneck *** fuel station on the side of my garage
.

well im a mechanic, so i get whatever trans flushes come through the shop, which offers me a minimal amount of trans fluid. this load im running now was from a freind who had 110 gallons that he got from another mechanic, i payed him 80 bucks for that load. after this i have another buddy whos freind works at a shop that gives their trans fluid away, ill be able to get my hands on that stuff for 40 cents on the gallon after this is over with.
Basically I'm in the automotive industry so i seem to end up knowing the right people i guess, it takes a little bit of tracking down but its not that hard. Ever since i dumped out the flush machine at work I pretty much just decided it was worth perusing so i started asking around and hunting the stuff down. took a bit of effort getting into it but its well worth it. I could only imagine the pain in the *** involved with making bio diesel... id rather just pour junk in the tank then have to make a fuel from scratch

Not only that, but when you "make" bio diesel like 1/3 of it isn't useable as fuel. I have however heard it can serve another purpose can't remember what tho... Honestly the stuff coming from a trans flusher shouldn't be too dirty. the first 5 quarts of heated fluid is used to flush and it still pumps clean fluid thru the system. I know it's "thorough" but seems like a waste
, part of why a trans flush is so expensive. The wife's car is in need of a trans service and I'm dreading the flush and filter change haha.

you can do a flush without a machine. Im about to do it on my old ladys car, must claim more used tranny fluid!!!!! her fluid might have coolant in it from a bad radiator tho. makes me wonder if theres any coolant in the fluid im burning? alot of flushes are done after a radiator goes internally...
the reason i decided to stay away from motor oil is because one day i bled someones brakes and realized i dumped the brake fluid in the same tank the oil is in
. and then it hit me, tranny fluid is generally clean, it has to be because it it plumbed into the flush machine closed loop. The used oil on the other hand is dumped into a roll around tank after it runs down my dirty hands, then i drop a muddy oil filter in top, leave the roll around tank outside all week and then pump it into the tank of a sludgy god knows what, diff fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, ect. I believe this is the main reason tranny fluid is popular because technically uncontaminated used engine oil is a good alternative fuel. I know ill be saving mine, after i do an oil change on my truck, my girlfriends, and my brothers truck ill have 7 gallons of free fuel.

I burn all the used petroleum-based fluids from our 5 vehicles as fuel "additive" at about 60-to-1 ratio in the Cummins engines - ATF, WMO, gear oil and power steering fluid. They are all just some sort of oil that gets mixed together in my 4-gallon filter contraption:

The Motorguard Filter (small one with the blue label) is a TP filter that goes down to submicronic and also absorbs any possible moisture that might be in there. The large filter on the bottom is a 10um fuel filter. I run it multi-pass circulating for anywhere from 10 to 20 hours between drain/refills, depending on how long it takes me to get around to using it. The resulting fuel add probably comes out cleaner than virgin new oil by the time I get around to pouring it into the fuel tanks, a half gallon at a time. I still need about 20% 2-stroke to make up the difference because I'm not generating enough waste oil.
