Default Dry starts? And...

Hey guys, got the dodge all back together with new studs and a cummins gasket, alls good with that, have done 1 retorque so far.

On to my next issue I need to solve, when I start it it takes 5-10 seconds to get oil pressure. It was running just regular old 15-40 and a fram filter but I switched to an AC delco filter( only other available) and Amsoil 5-40 for the winter. I though this may help but no change at all. When I took the old filter off it was maybe half full..

So what keeps the oil from draining back? This seems to be the issue.

I have not hooked up a mech. Gauge but the factory gauge is at about 3/4 when started cold and while cruising but at idle drops to the 275 mark.

Also to save from another thread being started I'll ask this here, how many times should I be retorqueing my head after the gasket? I torque in sequence, 25-75-125 with arp lube, ran it till it was hot and re-torqued, got between 1/8- 1/4 turn on all... I run a max of 40psi.

And finally, my timing pin will not move, any tricks? I adjusted the valves using te companion method and it seems to have worked... What a difference in noise level it made.

I thought most filters had a silicone "drain back valve" may be more typical of gas engines where the filter is mounted at different angles. but it's not uncommon for the filter to be half empty. The delay seen on your gauge is mainly the instrument cluster, doesn't mean your engine is running with no oil pressure. And I'd figure the 1 retorque would be adequate, I don't recall the directions for my studs saying a retorque was required. I'd double check on your next overhead, if no change then I'd say you're free and clear. No need for your timing pin, the valve overlap, paired cylinder method works just fine. There is a quicker method, set #6 in overlap, #1TDC compression you do intake exhaust on 1 and then I/E on different cylinders down the line, rotate the engine 360* and do it again. (only spinning once rather than multiple times) I know for sure it's the recommended proceedure for caterpillar.
